Any other Mama's who EBF whose LO's have prolonged Jaundice??

DD is in the safe level but her Billie has stopped going down. We had the light at home but the hospital makes you bring it back once they reach 285. I have to now take a urine sample from her (so not looking forward to that) and have an ultrasound on her liver and kidneys. I have also been told that I have to stop BFing for a while to see if that helps her at all. They warned me that she may not go back to the boob after having the formula.

Any one else going through this?? I hate that she may have to be FF after we had such a hard time getting BFing down. Now that we do we have to stop. Did your LO's go back to the boob?? Any advice to make sure she does??

  • I was told my LO may need supplement but when my milk came in it went away and she was fine and did not need it.  My doc said to give an ounce after BFing ask your doc if that is an option.  They did not want her to refuse the boob.

  • finn stayed in the hospital for jaundice. i still bfed, but after every feed offered him 15 ml formula. he had to "work" for the first feed (breast) but we were sure he got enough by giving him formula, too. he was a month early and had difficulty bfing, but this brought his levels down to a safe zone.
  • When my baby was Jaundice they had me bf and ff.  I am not sure why they are asking you to stop bfing.  I would ask if you can bf and then ff afterward.  That is what I did.
  • I needed to supplement with formula. What I did was nurse him, then I used a syringe to slowly feed him the formula (only 1oz per feeding). His jaundice levels went down within a week and a half.

    Best of luck!

  • My doctor had me bf and then supplement with an ounce of formula.  Lauren has done fine with switching between the breast and the bottle.  At first she was a little fussy but got over it quickly.

There is a rare kind of jaundice that can be caused by something in BM. Regular jaundice goes away in the first couple weeks (levels should progressively drop after day 4). OPs dr is just looking for other causes since the levels stopped dropping.

  • DD was jaundice at first and we had to have the billi-bed. At her 1 mo appt the ped noticed that her face and eyes were still a little yellow. He said that if it hadn't gone away by 2 mo he was going to have us do the ultrasounds too. I guess we will find out next Mon!

  • I had to stop BF over the weekend due to my LO's weight issues.  Someone suggested using breastflow bottles because it helps them "work for the milk."  While she was only off the breast for 3 days it worked and yesterday when we got cleared to try to start BF again she took the boob!  We still have to supplement and she is taking both just fine. I don't know if the bottles helped any but I was willing to try anything to give us any kind of advantage.
  • My DS has somethng called breastmilk jaundice which can last up to 12 wks. It is caused by unconjugated bilirubin (not the conjugated kind that causes problems with LOs).  He started looking less yellow/brown around 8 wks old. My dr never encouraged me to stop BFing.  I guess by the fact that your drs are doing an u/s on her kidneys and liver, your LO must have something different.  I wouldn't stop bfing unless there is some clear problem with your BM that I don't understand (and you dr has explained clearly to you).  Like other posters have asked, can give a bottle of formula each time after you BF?  I also recommend the breastflow bottle by Firstyears if you want to be able to switch back to BFing once this clears up.
