Babies on the Brain

Insurance Question

I have the option to add the baby to my insurance, on the Employee + child option.  DH would keep his separate insurance.  It will cost me $128 every two weeks.  I am already paying $72 every two weeks.  This doesn't seem that bad to me.

Does it seem expensive to anyone else?  Average?

DH's only option would be to add whole family coverage, at about $250 every two weeks, while he only pays about $30 for himself.

  • That sounds fabulous. Although who has better coverage?

  • Sounds normal to me.  And even if it wasn't normal, going that route still saves you money rather than everyone switching to your DH's insurance.

My job doesn't come with insurance, so I'm on DH's plan and his is like your DH's so when we have a baby our premium wont go up any.  I cant remember how much we pay a month though.

He has BCBS of Alabama, I have United Healthcare.  I have had no problems with my insurance at all.  I think mine is actually better coverage, although everyone in AL is obsessed with BCBS of Alabama.

  • Prices sound good.  Insurance is usually cheaper for employee + child than employee + spouse which is funny.  You just need to compare the coverages offered for each and co-pays/deductables.  That is the main thing.
  • I pay $70 a month for each of us.  So, $210 a month.

yours sounds like you have the best option figured out.  If your DH were to add the whole family, that sounds like it would cost more.

  • I would compare the policies to figure out which way you actually save money. What does hospitalization cost, urgent care, emergency services, etc. Biggest one: Co-Pays.

One example: On your policy you might have a huge co-pay for well child & OBGYN visits and on H's policy they might have no co-pay for these.

  • I pay just over $300 bimonthly to have us all covered for medial, dental and vision.  About $615 a month.

  • Ditto Mama_SAS...look beyond the monthly premium to what the coverage includes, and compare that to what you expect to use on a yearly basis (how many doctor's visits, prescriptions, blood tests, etc.). That can be hard to estimate for a new baby, but I'm sure other moms can give you advice.

This makes me appreciate my company and insurance even more...we just switched to a new co. and the employee + children option is $107/month (cheaper than employee+spouse, like a PP said, which I don't understand)

  • Thanks ya'll.  I'm definitely feeling better about our insurance situation.  I thought it was going to be way more.  I will check on all the other details, too.
