Isn't it the norm to be offered the NT Scan and quad screen?

My aunt is pregnant and I asked her if she was planning on doing any of these, and she had no idea what they were and acted like I was crazy and the only reason I was offered it is because I had complications.  I told her that I thought most, if not all, doctors at least ask if you want it done.

  • is the quad screen the blood test that is done with the NT scan?

my doctor definitely brought the NT scan up at our first appointment.  my MIL said she'd never heard of it, but from being on the boards, i think i expected it and had a general idea about what it was.

  • in my head, I think it's called the quad screen (but maybe not)...it's the blood work that you can get false positives or something like that.  NT screening is fairly new (maybe like late 90's) and with #1, insurance didn't cover it at all.  But 3 years later, it's covered.

  • My doctor offered it when I was pg with ds.   I wasn't high risk or anything.

  • I'm pretty sure the NT Scan is the ultrasound procedure and the quad screen is the blood test.  I thought my doctor told me that the NT scan was mainly for advanced maternal age or high risk pregnancies, but obviously some younger moms on this board, with normal, healthy pregnancies, have gotten it as well, so who knows.

  • I am not sure about the NT scan but I know I was offered the quad screening since I was over 35 when I had Tyler.

  • From my understanding the NT scan is not the norm I had one with Elysabeth because I was high risk, with this one we found out I was pregnant too far along to have it done.

I've had a quad screen with all three pregnancies, but my dr dosen't really announce or give me the option, he just sends you to the lab.

  • i was sort of casually offered it... dr said "let me know if you want to do it, we need to schedule it soon" but that was it.  most of my girlfriends were offered it/had it and only one was "high risk"

i thought it was normal to be brought up but not necessarily in the context of "you need to do this" like the Glucose test.

  • I wasn't offered the NT scan but she did offer the quad screen.  She just gave a brouchure about it and said when it would need to be scheduled if we chose to do it.

Mine was brought up in this context by the Dr though her nurse made it seem like more of an option.

  • I think the quad screen is done at twenty weeks

the NT scan and the b/w that go with it are first tri screenings.

We were offered it (with no risks), but I don't think it's the norm for a lot of the country

  • The ACOG says that all patients should be offered genetic screening (first trimester screen, quad screen, CVS, amniocentesis) regardless of their risk.  Not all docs do a very good job of this.  It used to be opinion that only women over the age of 35 should be offered invasive testing (CVS, amnio).  However, due to their safety profile the ACOG is really advocating that all patients be offered or made aware of all options.

First trimester screening:  blood test + NT scan

Second trimester screening:  quad screen (some clinics still just do triple screen)

Invasive testing: CVS for first trimester and/or amniocentesis for second trimester

See!  I knew I wasn't paranoid that her Dr didn't even offer it or inform her of it.  I know that she would have probably opted out of it, but she at least needed to be offered by her Dr.

    BTW..congrats on entering your 2nd tri!!! =)

  • Thanks!  It feels great to be out of first trimester.  :)

  • I wasn't actually offered the NT scan -- I asked about it, and my OB said 'Oh do you want to do that? Let me write you a referral...' I was actually a little surprised since I'm 36 and thought it would be an automatic thing, just about.

I know we did bloodwork at 16 weeks, but I'm not sure if it was the quad screen or not, to be honest! I know she tested me for CF.
