So, does this mean you have decided to go with your friends?
Looks like it. It'd end up being about $600 (our share) for an 5 day "weekend" trip. We're talking about getting a larger cabin and splitting the tab. I'm actually kind of excited about it.

Growing up, we went to Gatlinburg (from Atlanta) every Thanksgiving. I don't know why. It's definitely touristy, but the mountains are beautiful and great for hiking. DH and I went there our second year of dating, and we still joke about the guy walking around in a t-shirt that said "It ain't gonna lick itself." Not necessarily the classiest tourists...
I don't think I've ever been to Knoxville, and did you mean Nashville, TN or Asheville, NC?

Yeah, cb. It's still up in the air a bit about where exactly we'll be going. H and I are pretty laid back so it doesn't really matter where we go.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are fun. Kinda hokey, but tons of people go there every year. There's tons to do outside, including Smoky Mtn. Natl Park, CAdes Cove, Dollywood, and countless attractions, like putt putt ad go carts.
There's also touristy restaurants like the Apple Barn and Cider Mill, and the Dixie Stampede. Really nice cabins and chalets are relatively cheap, too.
ETA: There's some cool museums in Gatlinburg, like Star Cars and Ripley's Believe it or Not, and Ripley's Aquarium is awesome. The Arts and Crafts loop is a great thing to do for a half a day, by car.
My entire family goes every year for my mom's bday. We all stay in one Chalet-- 27 people. It is that big. Seven bedrooms, jacuzzi, huge kitchen with two fridges, two stoves etc. We don't even go into gatlinburg cause "we don't wanna lick it". We hike in the mountains and spend time in the mountains. Sometimes we go to the outlets but usually we just hang out on top of the mountain.
We stay at a place called "queen of the mountain". It costs 5 families $250.00 each for a weekend. We bring all our own food. I will be there in two weeks as a matter of fact.

I went to college about 45 min. from Asheville so I went up there all.the.time. Being more of a hippy-type myself, I like it there. DH swears all you have to do is dress shabbily and stand on a corner and someone will offer you their car by the end of the day. If you do go to Asheville, check out Malaprops bookstore. One of my favorite places.

Gatlinburg = very fun, very beautiful, very touristy, but in a good Southern way. I can send you pics galore if you're interested (we have a connection there with a kickass chalet with amazing views). And you'd have to hit up Dollywood too. Bonus.
Knoxville = just another big city IMO -- I'm sure it has plenty to do, but not exactly my idea of a vacation spot (unless you're a diehard UT fan or something). I've been there a lot though, so maybe I'm just bored with it and never really did the touring thing (was always there for school, sports, work, etc).
Asheville = very hippy in Asheville proper (nms at all), but ahhhh the Biltmore -- I could have explored that place for days....I'd love to go back to Asheville just to go there again (we only spent a few hours there passing through a couple years ago)

Thanks for all of the advice! They go every year, mostly for hiking and little niche stuff (she kept mentioning cades cove (the mill place?)). But she said this time of year + the stimulus money, a lot of stuff was being repaired/fixed/replaced.
She sent me links to a LOT of cabins, condos, chalets. Really--I just kind of want to say "H and I have x to spend TOTAL". Tell me where to show up with my bags. :laughs:
She seems to think that I'd fit in quite well in asheville. She kept saying "They are your people, they wear tevas and tie dye"

Re: Tell me more about gatlinburg, knoxville or ashville
We went to Gatlinburg when I was in 4th grade. We ate at a BBQ place. It was good.
Hmmm that is the extent of my memory and knowledge. LOL sorry!

Asheville NC?
It's very, um, cultural. Definitely an experience. Beautiful as well--it's very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
