When to introduce bottle?

My LC at the hospital recommended introducing a bottle (pumped) between 4-6 weeks. I was wondering if anyone had success starting earlier than that?  DD is a good nurser and we haven't had any trouble with latch, etc.  Thanks!

Re: When to introduce bottle?

  • We gave bottle at 4 weeks. She got one a day until 6 weeks when I returned to work and then she got 2 a day.

She still nurses great and I am happy I held out until 4 weeks so I could get my supply established and make sure she wouldn't have any problems nursing. Shortcuts don't get you far with BF'ing.

  • We started the bottle at 6 weeks and had a really tough time with it. She completely rejected it and would hold out at all costs until I got home. One time was 2 hours for a yoga class and another was 3 hours. I know it's not super long but when I heard that my heart melted! I felt terrible!

With the next baby we'll start a bottle a day at 4 weeks. We tried several bottles and the playtex latex nipples worked best for DD.

  • We introduced a bottle for DD and DS sometime between 2 and 3 weeks.  They only got 1 bottle a week until I went back to work around 10 weeks.  They had no problems with nipple confusion.  They also both take/took a pacifier from the first week on.

  • LO got a bottle at 2.5 weeks. He had no problem with it,

  • I introduced a pumped bottle at 3-4 weeks. We do 1X/day with my husband. This gets her ready for a bottle when I go back to work and allows her a bonding time with my husband.

  • We waited until DD was 15 weeks and I wanted her to get used to the bottle before going to daycare.  I didn't feel the need to introduce it earlier.
