3rd Trimester

Have you or will you be taking an Infant Care Class?

We are debating whether we should take an infant care class or not (given by our hospital)...  If you took one, did you find it helpful?

Thank you!

:-)

  • I'm not, but I am going to take an infant CPR class.

  • I took an infant first aid and CPR class when I was pregnant with DS, but not an infant care class. I felt confident enough in changing diapers, etc and didn't think it would be beneficial... but if you think it might help, go for it! I am all for learning as much as you can :)
  • we took one that was a 2 1/2 hour one-time class/workshop that just covered the basics (feeding, bathing, changing a diaper, ways to soothe a crying baby, etc.) and my fiance found it helpful, having not been around babies before.  i've babysat since i was about 13 so it was a nice refresher (been about two years since i last babysat a child still in diapers) for me.

  • Yes, I took one but it was free and it covered CPR....so to me it was a no brainer.

It actually was a lot of fun too!

  • We took a birthing class. The last two weeks/sessions were a breastfeeding class and a newborn care class. Not sure how helpful the newborn care one was. A lot of it I felt I knew just because I was a nanny for a newborn. I mainly did the classes for the actual birthing part. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to take the class!

  • We are taking one but for my DH....he has never been around infants...I was a nanny throughout college so I am sure I will find it megaboring....
  • We took the infant care class.. I found a few things helpful One thing they discussed was how infants look when 1st born.. Kind of a heads up for different things that are normal, like shapes of heads, marks on face, etc..

I think the breastfeeding class was very informative too. Possibly more helpful than the infant care class if you plan on BF.

  • We took one only b/c DH has no experience with babies and has no clue what to do.  My sister had a baby last May and DH looked super awkward holding my nephew.  I think it is helpful for someone with no experience but so much of it is common sense.  It was only like 2.5 hours long.  I would recommend you take the infant CPR class, though.
  • I took a CPR course that covered infants.

DH and I are also going to take an infant care class in a few weeks.  He has never really been around babies, and since our insurace covers it I figured that it might be a useful reminder since I haven't taken care of a baby for years.

  • Yep! DH is definitely taking one since he's totally scared and has no clue about how to take care of a baby. I am the oldest of 6 kids so I'm familiar, but it's been 15 years, so I want to take a class just as a refresher. I'm sure there are new things by now! I love learning as much as I possibly can. We are taking a Baby Safe CPR class as well.
  • My husband and I are taking one.  I used to babysit, but only for older children, never infants.  We were talking and realized that neither of us had ever changed a diaper or taken care of a baby, and we both kind of looked at each other like this:  O_O

I scheduled us for a 3 hour "newborn care" class the next day, so we wouldn't be too scared to leave the hospital with the baby.

  • We did but we both found it to be a waste. All they did was teach us how to bath and diaper a baby, really.

We loved the childbirth and BF classes, though.

  • We plan to. It's a week before my DD so we'll see if we make it. Neither of us have been around babies before so I hope it can maybe help with my self confidence in somewhat knowing what to do.

  • We took one, and it was ok, but we probably could have done without it.
