Babies: 9 - 12 Months

when did your LO start feeding him/herself

C picks up puffs (kind of palms them, not really a pincer grasp), but just throws them on the floor.  When did your LO getting the concept of actually putting the food in his/her mouth?  I am just using puffs for now b/c I don't want to steam fruits/veggies just to have him throw them!

FWIW, he will eat any type of food I feed him....he wants bites of Everything I eat!  It's just that I have to feed him the pieces.

Re: when did your LO start feeding him/herself

  • How long have you been trying?

I my experience (with only my 2 LO's, lol!) it took about 2 weeks or so for them to start putting it in their mouths themself.  DD would let me put things in her mouth, and then pick up puffs and play with them.  So finally I quit putting them in her mouth at all and she figured it out.

  • probably a few months (inconsistently)!  I almost always put the puffs on his tray, but also feed them to him (I am soft, I feel bad not feeding him b/c he likes them haha).  I guess I should put them on his tray and not feed him to let him figure it out....
  • 5m 3w because we never fed him. We only offered food on his tray and offered loaded spoons of food. DS will sometimes drop food but he only does it when he's done with it. Mostly he wants to hold onto it and explore it.

  • Around 7 months he was using the pincer grasp to  pick up food.  By 8 months he only wanted to feed himself so now he eats the same food we eat just cut up smaller!
  • Not until 10 months.  I was worried he was going to starve since he had been refusing to eat of the spoon for about a week but one day, it just clicked.

  • We started offering him finger foods at 6 months.  We also started with puffs and he would immediately pick them up and put in his mouth (or try).  He now tries anything we put in front of him.  He won't eat purees anymore.  He just cries until I put finger foods on his tray...then he happily eats away.

I guess it took him about a month of practicing with puffs to really "master" feeding himself.  I never feed him pieces of food myself.  He has opened his mouth for me to insert food...but I won't.  Once I set it on his tray he goes for it.
