Ds is a very chunky baby. He's a little over 28 pounds now. So he's still army crawling to get around the house since it seems like his little arms just aren't strong enough to hold himself up for very long.
But lately I've been trying to work on standing a little bit with him, and he seems very interested in it. The only catch is that he constantly stands on his toes and not flat footed. When I googled this I get a whole bunch of scary possibilities (Aspergers, foot tendon problems that could need surgery).
Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to encourage him to stand flat footed or if anyone had any experience with this.
We've got his 9 month check up tomorrow so I'm planning on asking our doc too.
TIA
Re: Standing/walking on tippy toes
I know this is fairly common, so don't jump to the worst conclusion just yet. Ask your pedi tommorow when and if you should be concerned.
One of my neices started walking on her toes and my sister used shoes that squeak to help encourage her to walk heel to toe.
My DS does this too. He is also kind of chunky at 23 pounds. He gets physical therapy once a month for a resolved torticollis issue, and I asked the PT about this last week. She felt his legs and his feet and such and said his muscles are a little stiff. She suggested stretching him 3-5 times a day by basically pushing the ball of his foot up towards his leg for about 30 seconds at a time. She also suggested that when he stands, help him lean forward a bit so that his hands are further forward than his feet (so his butt sticks out a little); that helps them put their feet down flat.
But definitely ask the ped about this tomorrow. Good luck!
Thanks for the idea of stretching out his legs. I'll try that and hopefully the pedi will be able to give me a better assesment of the situation tomorrow.
