Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Any 8-9 month olds not like to sit for very long?

DD can sit unsupported, but won't get in that position herself.  When I sit her up she will stay for a minute.  She isn't wobbly, has very good control, and will twist around and play with toys, but then she pushes herself back to lay down.  She doesn't topple, it's very deliberate.  I usually catch her mid-fall and she will still push back against my hand.

I've read that it's a sign of a delay if a baby doesn't sit unsupported by 8 months.  Do they only mean that if they don't sit at all, or should I be concerned about delay if my DD just doesn't seem to like to sit for very long?

I plan on talking to our pedi about this at our 9 month visit in a couple weeks, but am wondering if anyone here has any advice before then.

  • It sounds like she can sit unassisted, but she just doesn't want to. My DS prefers to be on his stomach, so he can crawl to where he wants to be. He doesn't like to sit for very long and does the same thing, throwing himself backwards, because he doesn't want to sit up.

  • DS is the same way--he can sit, he just prefers not to.  I'm not worried about it because he can do it.
  • I wouldnt worry to much about it if you know she can do it. DS doesnt sit still long, he would much rather explore and crawl then sit still! But talk to your pedi if you are still concerned.

  • I would just bring it up at the 9 month.  My DS is 8 months today and can sit but not for very long and still will topple over.  But it seems like he is doing that because he has an easier time playing on his back so there isn't a lot of motivation to sit.  I would think it's only a delay if she can't do it at all, it sounds like she just prefers not to sit for a long time.
  • My two were born 10 wks early and DD does sit up fine.  DS is just like the rest of the comments and throws himself back.  If he's really into what's going on he will sit up sometimes 20 minutes at a time.  Usually he throws himself back after about a minute or so also.  Pedi said she knows he can do it and she's not worried.  I still kind of am tho...
