Clicky - Rice Cereal: WWYD?

DS seems to have a lot of gas/GI upset with Rice Cereal.  Could this be a sign that he isn't quite ready for solids or is gas just a common problem with Rice Cereal?  I'm trying to decide what to do. (NOTE: I do plan on calling my Dr tomorrow also)

This. DD couldn't stand the rice cereal, but she LOVED peas when we tried her on that, and likes the oatmeal okay... Rice cereal is loaded with iron, so it causes more gas/constipation issues (as if these kids aren't getting enough iron with their formula!!).

  • My LO hated all cereals, ended up screaming afterwards from gas. We don't do any cereals now, just fruits and veggies and he's a happy boy.
  • We tried rice cereal with DD and she didn't even eat it. So we know she isn't ready. If your LO is eating it but gets an upset tummy then I would try something else.

He's definitely eating it.  Ate all of it the first time we tried.

  • I seem to recall reading that starting solids before 6 months can be correlated with increased GI infections or something like that (babies start out with an "open gut" designed for optimal BM absorption, and after it matures, it's primed for solid food digestion). Since all babies mature differently, maybe yours is just not quite ready yet. Probably depends on what the issue is, though; rice cereal very often causes constipation, so if that's the only issue and you want to keep doing solids, I'd just try something different (hopefully the doc will have some suggestions when you call)
  • rice cereal is constipating, which can cause those symptoms.  I would try oatmeal.

I was going to suggest this.

  • You don't HAVE to do any type of cereal. It is mostly just to teach them about this new way of eating.

DD HATES rice cereal but likes oatmeal. We pretty much went straight to veggies when she started solids a month ago.

I agree with this.  I won't be starting any solids for at least a month.  I know it is tempting since it is fun, but there is no advantage to starting early...ask your pedi.  There are a ton of studies.

My pedi is the one that told us to start solids at our 4 month appointment.  He actually seemed surprised we hadn't started yet.

  • I find it amazing that there are so many different opinions about when to start solids and what to start with!  It seems like every pedi has different recommendations!  Very frustrating as a new mom!!

Many posts say rice cereal is constipating but then other moms I have talked to say that oatmeal is the constipating one!

Some pedi's and books say to start solids at 4 months, others say 6 months!

What is a new mom to do!!!!!!!  Personally I plan to start solids at 6 months since no advantage imo to start earlier and plan to try both cereals out to see what he likes/tolerates.

  • Rice cereal constipated DS to no end.  We switched to oatmeal and it's much better.

We aren't starting fruits/veggies until 6 months because of his protein allergy & reflux, but he gobbles up the oatmeal.

  • We haven't started DS on rice cereal yet, but his pedi said that if he gets "backed-up" to switch to oatmeal...
  • We had some constipation and gas issues when we increased the amount of oatmeal we were giving DD.  We stopped for a few days so her system could get back to normal.  We started again last week and decreased the amount.  Instead of doing 4tbsp, we are down to 2.5tbsp.  We put more BM in it to make it runny.  If after a week of this she does well, we will increase it to 3.5tbsp and work our way up to a thicker cereal.  The pedi also told us to give her 2oz of water after the cereal.

  • Try oatmeal.  If that doesn't do the trick, try barley.
