Serious ? Regarding Bumbos vs. Jumperoos

And, I'm serious.  So there was a bit of flamming the other day because a bumpie put her LO in a jumperoo because it's too early.  I get it.  I understand all the articles and what not for why it's not safe.  Got it.

Here's my question:  How is it that the bumbos are?  The way they look to me, there is no back support, so babies just kinda fall over.  At least in a jumperoo they have back and side support.  I looked at one for my LO yesterday because of all the controversy over the jumperoo, and I just don't think they look like they would help my child developmentally/physically what so ever.  With a little assistance from some extremely study boxes, LO can touch the floor.  At least she has back and side support.  Bumbos are supposed to be good for any baby that is able to hold their heads up.  But it seems to have no support whatsoever.

I'm being serious.  I want to know why bumbos are considered "safe" compared to jumperoos.  Please no flamming.  Just curious.

Re: Serious ? Regarding Bumbos vs. Jumperoos

  • Hi! haha It's me, the flamed bumpie!

Anyway... we do have a seat for Kirsten, its the Summer Infant Super Seat. Basically a bumbo with a higher back and shell that is used for when they are smaller, take it out when they get bigger.

She sits SO well in it. I put her in it maybe 3 weeks ago? so 5 weeks old. And she sat really well. We started out slow. Only a few minutes and I was literally inches from her in case she flopped over. She did fall asleep in it lol so I took her out.

She sits much better in it now, even though she doesn't sit "up" more like a little back. But she doesn't flop over at all and really barely moves, other than looking around and reaching.

I do know exactly what you are talking about though, and that was my argument for why I felt it was okay for her to be in the Jumperoo. How is it really any different? Yeah its a seat, and different concept. But she is by far way more snuggly in the Jumperoo.?

I also thought to myself... we use a baby bjorn and other carriers... how is the Jumperoo really different from them (other than in a carrier she is being held against me).

We still only put her in it for like 2 mins. But she does seem to enjoy it for those 2 mins.

So yeah I see where you are coming from. We use our seat just as something else for her to do... other than laying on a mat, or on her tummy, using a boppy... all the other millions of things we have for her haha

    ?

    ?

Back to the bottom line that I believe was drawn due to my flaming.... you are the mother, you do what's best. only you know what is right for your child. if a Bumbo isn't something you're into, then don't use it. Your baby will develop right along with the rest of them.?

  • LO has no issues sitting up, in fact, she starts whinning or attempting to pull herself forward to be more up right if she's not.  So maybe I should give it a try.  But every time I look at the them, I'm so afraid she's just going to do a face plant into the thing.  And hard plastic + babys face = BAD BAD situation.  :0)

    ?

DD sneezes all the time in her seat (again its not a bumbo, never used one so i don't really know about them, i do have friends that love them) and i leap forward thinking she'll sneeze herself out of the chair, and she doesn't haha. it does have straps too?

  • The "post" in the front of the Bumbo goes to the middle of LO's chest so it prevents them  from falling forward.

The Bumbos also aren't plastic...they're made of sturdy foam.  Smile  HTH!

  • Maybe I'll take LO to Target tom, open up the box and try her out in it first lol.  None of my friends have them, so they are no help.  But, I could be one of "those people" so that I don't waste my money on something she may hate.

But thank you ladies so much.  I appreciate it!  And it helped a bunch!

    Good luck!

  • Just to throw something out there: when I worked at a Bright Horizons, our director would not allow a Bumbo to be used in the infant room because of "issues" with them not supporting babies' necks/heads properly (I'm talking young infants here).  We also were not allowed to put babies younger than five months (usually six) in the Exersaucer (similar to Jumperoo).  We sometimes had Early Intervention therapists at the center and they said that young infants using the Exersaucer/Jumperoo could potentially develop leg and feet problems such as bowed legs because their muscles aren't ready to put their weight on them yet.

That being said, I put my daughter in the Bumbo at three months and the Exersaucer at four and she is fine.  I agree with you, Ehicks, it is a parent's decision as to what is right for their child.

I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • DD loves, loves, loves her Bumbo! She sits up pretty well, and the higher little piece in the back keeps her head from falling backward. She sneezes her head forward sometimes, but then she'll pick it back up. She likes being able to sit up instead of being held or propped up in the Boppy or w/e. Sitting in the Bumbo is when she does most of her "talking"!

  • A lurking 6-12er here, but I always play nice.

As far as Bumbos go, they sink really far into them so there is quite a bit of support on the sides and back. We started using it for short periods of time at 2 1/2 mo. Before then, even though DD had good neck control, it seemed like her neck was still squashed and it looked uncomfortable. We really didn't get much use out of Bumbo though and its been collecting dust for months. Heres DD in at almost 3 mo old.

We started using the Jumperoo around 4 mo. I don't see a problem with them just sitting in it earlier, but if they are using their feet and kicking that thing can really bounce. To me, baby needs better head control for a jumperoo because there head is getting thrown about if they start pushing off whereas a bumbo is stable. Also, IMO FP jumperoo is the best invention ever. DD still loves it and she goes nuts in there now spinning and jumping. I think she really got the hang of it around 5 mo.
