chicco keyfit 30 or convertible seat?

i'm having a hard time thinking today and need some help -

we currently have a chicco infant car seat that goes up to 22 lbs, w/ a 30 lb base (we  bought it as part of a travel system). the base is currently installed in my vehicle. lo is around 17 lbs now - i have no idea when he'll hit 22 lbs, but i'm assuming that will be in the next 5 months or so.

starting next month, lo is going to daycare. dh is going to drop him off, while i will pick him up. we therefore need to get a carseat for dh's car. should we get a chicco keyfit 30, since that comes w/ the larger car seat and the base? or should we get a convertible car seat? either would be in dh's car for the time being. the chicco that i'm looking at is currently at the same price as a maxi cosi convertible seat on amazon, so price difference isn't a factor.

i'm thinking we should get the convertible seat for dh's car and then i'll just end up getting another convertible seat for my car further down the line, once dh grows out of the 22lb seat that's in my car.

thoughts? tia!!

  • Why not just get a second base for the carseat you are using now. Most people say that by the time your LO is over 25 pounds you are not going to want to carry him around in the infant carrier.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • I would say definitely don't get the keyfit 30 at this point because he'll grow out of that quicker than he would a convertible seat.  Either get the convertible seat or, like pp said, just get another base for the infant seat you have.  We have 2 bases, and the plan is just to leave the infant seat at daycare.  they have a whole closet just for all the infant car seats at our daycare.

  • i didn't even think to leave the seat at the center! see, i told you i had a hard time thinking today! :)

i'll definitely consider that. if not, then yeah, i'm thinking just getting a convertible seat is the way to go at this point.

    thanks!

  • I definetly would get the convertible carseat now! I only kept both my DD's in our chicco keyfit 30 until 6 mo. and they were only about 15 lbs. then. They loved their switch and liked looking outside and still love their Britax Marathons at ages 4 & 2. The marathon is awesome and comfy for even smaller babies. It says you can use it rear facing at 6 lbs. up to 65 lbs. I believe. DD #1 will have used hers for 5 yrs. when we switch to a booster so definetly worth the $$ too. We won't have to switch over b/c of weight but rather the straps are at their max so when it becomes too tight I guess we'll get the booster. HTH!

It says 5-65lbs. However, this is not true. Britax are horrible seats for smaller infants. They have one of the highest harness slots on the market.
