So DH and I have been a tad stressed about the whole car seat situation. I have a 2 door VW Rabbit, the back seat is NOT big enough to fit a rear facing seat, and we do not have the money to get a new car right now. I pretty much came to terms with having to put the passanger seat all the way forward to accommodate a rear facing carseat..WELP not any more!..I was reading in a magazine I got in the goody bag my doctor gave me about a new car seat designed for smaller cars..plus its adorable!..check it out Yes

I just took a peek on consumer reports for this model and it gets very good ratings for crash protection and forward facing fit, just be warned it does get a poor rating for rear facing fit. Hopefully it ends up being a good fit for your car.

Its either this car seat or no further use of the front passenger seat of my car..unless someone on here wants to buy me a new car?....no....anybody??..well it was worth a try.. Stick out tongue

What are you talking about? Why would you want a carseat that is going to sit there for months. Get one that is closer to the due date so that it is as new as can be and you can get the most use out of it (ie. other children etc.) And yes... there is a manufacture date and an expiration date on the car seats.

I didn't say to not get that type of car seat I just said... don't buy it now.

No it will last a few years... but if you want to have #2 or #3 it could be cutting it close. Most car seats expire within 6 years. So if you bought it now- the baby would need it in 7 months- use it for up to a year maybe. That's why I think it's best to buy the latest manufacture date on a car seat. I was buying a convertible carseat online for my son and I called and the company could tell me over the phone what the date was. So it's pretty common to ask or check it out. Also if there are any recalls you might as well get the latest model instead of dealing with recalls (they are not fun!)

I wasn't trying to be "dramatic" but I doubt it's something new moms think of.

Absolutely not. Usually it's a period of 6 years. You're fine to buy it now if you so choose.

Yeah I see your point, hopefully in a year or so we are going to get a bigger car so future babies could have a bigger seat.. just right now its the ONLY seat that will sit in my car..Thanks for the advice

I don't think Skimmy was trying to be snarky at all! She is just giving a word of advice. Keep in mind that when you order your car seat they aren't going to run to the factory and make one for you. They are going to take it off of the shelf and send it out. It could have been sitting on the shelf for months. I think it makes sense to wait until you absolutely need the seat to order it, because you'll have a better chance of getting a newer model.

Regardless...congrats on finding a seat that you like and that fits your car.

Yes Mrs. KG the convertible will have the same type of experation date. If you don't buy the carseat till you need it then your child would most likely be 7/8 before it expired since most use an infant seat till a year old. The big weight range(up to 100) is b/c some kids are bigger than others. My 2 year old is just pushing 30 pounds where some of his friends(same age) are 10 pounds heavier due to height, genetics, whatever. Some kids will use the seat longer than others but most 8 year olds don't need a carseat anymore

People don't buy the 100 pound limit seats for a newborn, they buy them when their child is older and bigger and needs a higher limit seat, so it still isn't expired when they use it. Car seat expirations are real and for a good reason. The plastic doesn't hold up to sun/heat. It can get brittle and shatter easily when it is old. The advice to wait is sound. There is no benefit to buying it early unless there is a very good deal you don't expect to see again.

Car seats do have an expiration date, but it is 6 years from manufacture for most brands.

To find the expiration date for your seat: look for a sticker on the bottom or sides with a date - this is the date of manufacture; look in your instruction book for the amount of time the seat is good; do the math.

Make sure to check this because some car seats may have been on store shelves for quite a while.

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. I wasn't trying to question the advice to wait. I was just trying to figure out if I was being oversold. Since I am totally ignorant of how quickly the average child grows (I didn't hit 70 pounds until I was in 6th grade) I didn't realize that there was that good of a match between useful life and the expiration date. Thanks for helping to straighten me out.
