What did you eat while pregnant?

Did you stick to eating alot of fruits / vegetables?

Did you eat what you craved alot?

What foods did you stay away from?

Thanks in advance  :)

Re: What did you eat while pregnant?

  • First trimester, I ate like crap!  I had a lot of McDonalds.  Greasy food is just what sounded good!  By the second trimester, I was much more of a health nut.  I ate fruit and veggies every day and had no more fast food.  I did eat a lot of chocolate though!

I craved grilled cheese sandwiches, but that is about all I craved.

I stayed away from peanut butter (due to allergies that run in my H's family), nuts, caffeine, fish, and lunch meat.

  • I ate a lot of grilled chicken and watermelon because that's what I craved.  I also had an obsession with the apple pie and chocolate cake in the work cafeteria.

Other than that I just ate pretty much whatever I wanted, but in moderation.

  • With this pregnancy, I just ate what I could keep down for the first 14 weeks. I ate a lot of bananas, yogurt and spoonfuls of peanut butter. Now, I'm eating whatever strikes me as good. I'm craving meat big time so I've been indulging in things that I would have never wanted when I wasn't pregnant...ribs, steaks...etc....

I lost over 10 pounds the first couple months, so I've been indulging in some things I probably shouldn't just because I have a lot of catching up to do. Lots of ice cream. :-)

  • During the first tri, I ate whatever sounded good - I was constantly nauseous so it was difficult.

The rest of the time, I just ate like I normally do plus a little extra for the baby, tried to drink a lot of water.  I tried to get extra protein and fruits and veggies.

I didn't really stay away from anything - I still ate lunch meat, sushi (although I stuck to sushi with cooked fish).  I didn't eat blue cheese at all, but it was game-on for everything else.

During the first tri I ate whatever sounded good which wasn't much.  Once I got more of an appetite back I craved sweets, mostly brownies, ice cream and fruit.  But after a 9 lb gain in one month (around 20 weeks) I tried to cut back on excessive sweets.

I stayed way from lunch meat and soft cheeses.  I did eat sushi (only with cooked fish).  I ate tuna in moderation.

  • First trimester I had to eat all the time not to get sick (and I gained 7lbs by the 14th week!).  I craved lemonade and anything citrusy.  I also ate a ton of fruit.  I've been buying a ton of strawberries, blue berries, etc, washing and cutting them up at the beginning of the week and then eating that for breakfast or whenever I'm hungry.  I also love bananas.

I've slowed down on my caffine intake.  I only drink 1/4-1/2 cup of coffee in the morning and have cut out diet coke.

Other than that, whatever I want in moderation :)

  • In my first pregnancy I ate pretty much like I usually do.  I remember always wanting Nutrigrain Blueberry waffles for breakfast.  For lunch I'd always make chicken salad, egg salad, black bean & cheese quesadillas and for dinner I'd make the usual and keep it balanced with lean protein, veggies, whole grains.  Yogurt as a snack.  I'm not a big fruit person b/c it truly is nature's dessert and I prefer my sugar come from chocolate!  :)  I do like fruit in the summer and had a summer pregnancy, and I remember loving really ripe peaches and plums and walking through the grocery store eating popsicles and Edy's Lime bars to cool off, lol!

In my second pregnancy, I had morning sickness (that I didn't have the first time) and could only eat bagels w/ lightly spread cream cheese, dry cereal, saltines, ginger ale, etc.  Once I got passed that I had more cravings.  I always craved salty stuff like olives, hot dogs, etc. and I also went through a phase where nothing ever sounded good but a Frisch's cheeesburger kids meal, lol.  I don't even like hot dogs or cheeseburgers under normal circumstances, unless they are the good kind at a cookout.  Then after getting my salty fix, I'd want a chocolate glazed donut.  I definitely ate what I craved but I didn't go overboard and I still ate lots of veggies, whole grains, etc. like I normally do.

It really is no wonder why Ava was 6 lbs. 9 oz. and Charlotte almost 9!  Ha!  Also PB&J was my favorite during both pregnancies, so much so that whenever I really crave it I take a pregnancy test!

  • I ate pretty much everything ;)

No, really I ate like I always ate, which included fruits and veggies. I ate more meat to get more protein, but that's about it.

I couldn't eat eggs, the smell of them made me want to puke.

    I ate a lot of Ben & Jerry's.

  • My first pregnancy I had m/s pretty bad in the first tri and part of the second tri. I ate alot of crackers, fruits, and veggies. I didn't have very many cravings. Towards the end I craved Larosa's cheese pizza and Skyline cheese coneys. I went to a baby show downtown and walked past the Skyline and the baby started doing flips. So he must have loved Skyline also, as he does now. Oh I did crave watermelon ALL-THE-TIME!!! I actually ate it right before I went to the hospital. I could not be around onions and I couldn't eat red spaghetti sauce. I limited my Diet Coke's to once a day, and usually only had one a week. I did crave sweet tea in the summer. It did help that I was pg when the weather was nice b/c of the farmers markets. Summer always makes me crave fruit and veggies and I love going to Finley Market. Now this pregnancy i'm only 5 weeks so nothing yet. M/S started at week 6 with my first so hopefully I wont get it this time around. Also forgot I hated scrambled eggs unless it had lots of ketchup on it. Normally I would gag at this. The other thing that helped me with m/s was regular potatoe chips, which I originally hated. I love them now! That was the one thing my mom ate lots of when pg with me. Also I watched my salt intake closely. I don't really salt anything except for potatoes, but I didn't eat much canned or boxed things. I did eat lots of chicken. Ok - I think i'm done. haha

Jersey - I loved hearing about your Ben & Jerry's love experience when you were pg.

  • I was bad and ate a lot of sweets during both pregnancies...hence my weight gain. I couldn't get enough cake, cookies, ice cream...cheesecake. I like sweets anyways, but good lord, it was bad during my pregnancies.

I still ate other good things too:)

  • With my first pregnancy, I really tried to eat healthy and eat a balanced diet loaded with fruits and vegetables.  I did OK for a while but once I got to third trimester, I was hungry ALL the time and I just ate everything that sounded good.  I didn't have a lot of cravings, except I loved spicy food, the hotter the better.  That was weird because I used to disdain that type of stuff, but I couldn't eat anything that was too bland -- and I never got heartburn!

With my second pregnancy, I was sick the whole first tri and into the second.  I ate whatever I could keep down.  I craved curly noodle soup and mini white powdered sugar donuts.  And I drank at least one soda a day, if I didn't have caffeine I had a headache and felt even sicker.

I avoided lunchmeat when I was pregnant because the smell made me feel gross.  I didn't avoid much else, but I'm not a real adventurous eater, so that's not saying much.

I forgot about that part! I about lived for Quaker Steak, the hotter the wings the better. For whatever reason it carried over post-pregnancy, too.

Same here......I still love spicy food.  This must have been foreshadowing Justin's future personality type, because he is a firecracker!

Haha weird...I hated eggs the whole time I was pregnant too!

I tried to keep it healthy but had no problem indulging.  I craved tuna the entire 2nd and 3rd trimester and had to really limit myself (I wanted it DAILY).  I also loved oranges and think I ate one daily while pregnant (Macy hates them...I must have made her sick of them, hahah).

I avoided caffeine in first trimester and most of second...by end of second I allowed myself 1 cup of coffee or 1 diet coke a day.  I tried to avoid lunch meat all of my pregnancy but had turkey a couple of times.  I also avoided sushi which was SOOO hard because I love sushi!

  • Forgot to add I also craved green olives. I almost ate an entire jar at one time. lol....that is so bad to say. Can I say sodium spike!!  I just started eatting them again and that was one sign that made me think "your pg". DH noticed also.
  • I am trying to eat a piece of fruit at least once a day and get some veggies somewhere too. My appetite is really up which makes it hard to control my eating like I should be, because I don't want to gain too much right away. Right now I've only gained about 3 or 4 lbs which is fine. Every day I have yogurt, milk, sometimes some cheese, and sometimes OJ for calcium.

I don't have specific cravings, but I do have aversions. For example, a chicken breast, a piece of fish, or a steak all sound unappetizing to me. If I get protein, it has to be cut into pieces and mixed into what I'm eating. So I'm having things like spaghetti with meat sauce. Mexican food consistently sounds good to me, as does thai food.

  • As for the things you're 'supposed' to avoid during pregnancy: I'm limiting myself to half a cup of coffee in the morning and every once in a while I'll have a diet coke with lunch, but I don't get a refill. I only eat tilapia, salmon, shrimp, and scallops (no tuna or other fish). I have had lunch meat twice or so, but it's only been Boar's Head brand from my local grocery store.

  • I eat everything and anything. With Maggie I wanted sweets, this time I've been more into savory. But everything in moderation.  I think I've eaten the baby's weight in Maytag bleu cheese in the last three weeks, I cannot get enough. But with both I craved a ton of fruit near the end..melon, berries, pineapple, and this time spinach.

  • During first trimester it was all about survival for me. I ate a lot of carbs - bread and potatoes. I ate a lot of sour stuff, Lemonheads, Sour Punch Kids, drank a lot of lemonade. Anything sour sounded good to me, plus it helped with my morning sickness.

I was able to eat better after about week 10 or so, that was when my morning sickness/all day nausea stopped. My only cravings were during first tri I wanted chocolate soft serve ice creams and during third tri I drank a TON of chocolate milk. I drank probably 2 gallons to myself each week, thank goodness DH works at a Kroger store. It had to be 2% milk with Nesquick mixed in, why I do not know.

  • In the first trimester, the key for me was to not let myself get hungry or I would feel sick.  My go to snack was Wheat Thins.  I would keep a box of them at work with me!

My only big cravings so far are fruit, sugar free jello with redi-whip, and orange juice.  Luckily nothing that it too bad!  I just try to eat like I normally do and then usually have my jello as a nighttime snack!  My appetite really hasn't increased and as of 19 weeks I have gained about 5 pounds.

I really only stay away from lunch meat.  I don't like seafood or sushi so that isn't a problem for me!  I also limit my caffeine.  I drink a 1/2 caff coffee in the mornings and sometimes have a coke.  I also watch the homemade caesar dressing in restaurants because of the raw eggs.

  • Did you stick to eating alot of fruits / vegetables?  I craved only fresh uncooked fruits and veggies, so I ate those by the truckload when I wasn't nauseous.  I also ate a lot of yogurt.

Did you eat what you craved alot?  I craved lots and lots of fruits and veggies so I let myself eat until I was happy.  The only random cravings I had were lemonade, and soft hot pretzels, but the pretzel thing was maybe 3 times.  i didn't get many craving with DD.  With DS, I craved jalapeno peppers, and ate them right out of the jar.  I also wanted crushed ice, slush puppies,  peanut butter, milk by the gallon, and baked potato all the time.  I gained 65 pounds with DS, and 6 pounds with DD.  I laugh because DD's favorite foods are berries and fresh veggies, while DS douses EVERYthing he eats with Tabasco.  I'd say there is relavance in what you crave and their food preferences later.

What foods did you stay away from?  Chicken was something we ate in some form 2-3 times a week until my m/s with DD kicked in.  I developed a strong aversion to it that did not go away until delivery.  With DS, I was put off by any beef product.  Getting enough protein was a challenge.

LOL.  The thought of eggs made me ill & the stench was awful.  I remember them bringing them in the morning after I had Carter and I scarfed them down, but just one day earlier and they would have made me hurl.

  • I ate a lot of fruit and bowls of cereal during 1st tri.  After that I ate Subway and Blizzards from Dairy Queen at least twice a week.

I had a salad during 1st tri that made me sick, so I did not eat a single salad the rest of the pregnancy.  As soon as I had DD, I had salads everyday in the hospital and when I got home I ate alot of them too.  I think I missed them.  :)

I limited my Diet Pepsi to one a day and cut out coffee.  But I am pretty sure I ate everything else (including lunch meat).  :)

  • First Trimester-  Mostly carbs....the only thing that seems so sound ok and sit well in my tummy!

2nd-3rd- All healthy.  Never had an cravings (except milk) so I ate my usual way. Fruit, dairy, wheat, protiens and all that good for you stuff!

  • I ate anything and everything!  I did not always go for my cravings but also did not have many of those!  I ate lunchmeat, hot dogs, etc...I don't eat seafood at all so no problems there.  I ate tons of fast food with both mine.  Good luck and enjoy!
