3rd Trimester

pedicute concerns

Has anyone heard that getting a pedicure can induce labor?

I'm almost 38 weeks and am getting a mani/pedi on Friday -

I was trying to ask Dr. Google :) and got mixed reviews -

should I have the nail tech - just avoid any massaging of my feet and ankles?

Thanks !

Re: pedicute concerns

  • I am a cosmetologist and you are fine to get a pedicure. There are pressure points on the ankles that can induce labor but they need to be pressed in the right spot with the right amount of force. Honestly the foot massages I gave where just to help them relax. If you are worried just ask them to massage lightly.

  • There are a few pressure points that *can* induce labor. Though not likely it is best to inform your pedicurist ahead of time, though at 38wks I'd assume it's obvious that you are PG, lol.

  • I've never known anyone that went into labor after a pedi.  One of them got a pedi everyday after her due date for 10 days and nothing ever happened.  She finally had to be induced.

  • I'm getting one tomorrow. I'm not concerned.
  • Wow... I have never heard of such a thing. I have gotten three pedicures since late 2nd Trimester. I just had one the week before last at 36 weeks and if it makes you feel any better I have 0% progress... completely closed.

This, get one and enjoy it. As cosmetologists we arent trained in all of the pressure points but I think a person would have to be pretty skilled to do it in a way that would start labor. And also if this really worked I think that more people would be getting their ankles poked on when they go past their due dates and you just dont hear about it.

With my first pg, we took a labor massage class, and they showed us where the spot was and how to massage it to try to induce labor.  I can't remember exactly where it was off the top of my head, but I do remember that it wasn't that easy to just hit and that it wasn't a normal foot massage/pedi type maneuver.  They also said that it usually doesn't work very well unless your body is already ready to go into labor, so while you wouldn't want to intentionally mess around with trying it if you weren't full-term, you should be ok anyway.

    Go.  Enjoy.  You'll be fine.

I have avoided getting one because I was told the same thing by a nurse at the hospital when I was admitted at 31 weeks due to complications.

  • I've gotten a pedicure every week since I've been pregnant and it's been fine.

This is what I've heard as well.  I would hope that if the cosmetologist sees you walking in with 38 week belly that they would steer clear of putting pressure on the pressure points that Annabelle is talking about.  I know I would.  I just got a pedicure on Saturday and baby is still sittng tight in there.  Smile

  • I wish that was true. I got one last night.
  • Thank you all so much ! :)
