Postpartum Depression

Work and PPD

How do you handle work and PPD?  I am often on the verge of tears and have a tremendous amount of stress at work.  How are you managing?  I got a script for Zoloft a month ago but didn't start taking it because my baby started sleeping better and I was feeling better from that, but now work is really dragging me down and I think I need to do something.  I have calls in to therapists...my midwife was really strange about the whole thing so I don't want to talk to her about it again.  Just looking for advice on how to cope with work.  Did you tell your boss/coworkers?  I think it's sometimes obvious that I'm not 100%...  thank you, this is my first post here.

Re: Work and PPD

  • I didn't tell my boss, but I have a few close friends here at work that I told. It's tough - some days are going to be better than others. On the bad days I set small goals - get to noon (lunch), get to 3 and then go get a snack, etc. And I take little breaks (take my full hour for lunch outside the office, go to the vending machine on a different floor, just get up from my computer and engage in something else for a few minutes).

  • I told my boss because I spend more time awake during the day with him than I do at home with DH. I figured he should know what was going on for that reason. I haven't told anyone else here - figured it is none of their business. I, too, set small goals and take frequent breaks if for nothing else but walk around and get a glass of water.

  • I started feeling better, but filled my script for Zoloft anyways, and I think it's helping even more!  I did tell my boss for a few different reasons.  The first is that I can talk to her.  More importantly, I felt she needed to know why my performance had been suffering.  I felt like I had been such a bad employee lately, and I felt like she deserved to know why.  I really felt relieved to know that she thought I had been doing a great job - and that it was part of the depression making me think I wasn't performing to my standard.  It was also comforting to know she had suffered from PPD.  I have not told any of my co-workers about my PPD.  GL!

  • I told a few co-workers that I work closely with.  They knew something was up anyways.  They really make an effort to get me out during lunch, get me to exercise, and try to make me smile during the day.  Plus, it helps to know that someone knows what I am going through.

  • I told my boss, she and I are close. A few of my co-workers know what I am dealing with as well.  Good luck.

  • I did not tell my boss.  I was a sensitive person before PPD, so now I can be a mess.  There have been two occasions when I got so upset I had to shut my office door and cry.
