SUV vs. Mini Van Poll (non clicky)

Which do you prefer? Pros/Cons? Which do you actually use?

DH and I need to get a new vehicle soon, and I can't decide which I would prefer. Mini Vans just seem so convenient, yet I hate them with a passion. lol.

  • i'm with you, I have a serious dislike of minivans and would opt for an SUV or even better, a station wagon.  The trouble is you get SO much more space in a minivan and with a second kid on the way, it's so tempting.  especially for road trips.  DH and I have discussed getting on (mostly in jest), but we can't decide who would have to drive it full time.

  • SUV.  I can't stand mini-vans.  DH and I are looking into the Kia Sonota.

  • I will never ever own a mini van and I don't care how many kids I have. We are going to look at getting a SUV in early next year probably an Escape, Mazda, Vue, etc....if we need bigger I will opt for a larger SUV!
  • when we had only one kid i hated them.  now with two i think they're amazing and totally see why people buy them.  much more space and easier to move around inside.

I have a Vue and we are just out of room. DH is 6'4" and we are just out of room. DS's carseat is in the middle, and he kicks DH while he is driving.

  • I went with the smallest SUV I could find that fit our needs and our legs (DH is 6'6" and I'm 6'1").  I've been loving my Mitusbishi Endeavor because it handles so nicely.  DH has a Tahoe and I hate backing up in it.

Already dreading the day I give up my mid-size SUV when we have another LO but I'll go to a bigger SUV not a Mini Van.

  • Neither - I'm planning to go with a station wagon.
  • We are getting a mini van this Spring.  I could care less how I look while driving, I am going for something I need.
  • I was completely against mini-vans but we bought one last spring and it has so much space and with the fold and go seats it is very convenient and more comfortable.  With a 2nd coming in June I am glad DH talked me into a van.

  • We're looking into buying a minivan now.  With #2 on the way I just think it'll be easier.  I considered an SUV because they are cuter, but lets face it, SUV's are just the new, cooler minivan anyway.  And I don't really care if strangers think I'm a frumpy mom based solely on what I drive.  Oh, and I live forever and ever away from civilization, so fuel economy plays into my decision as well.

As far as the differences go, minivan's just tend to have more room and are better equiped for kids, IMO.  Plus, I like that the doors slide open so no dings (I'm paranoid about dinging cars).

I totally get this.  My thoughts when I was still driving a small SUV.  That said, my current vehicle is a Hyundai Entourage (minivan).  I actually love it.  It suits my needs perfectly.  I imagine that when the kids get older and I don't have to crawl back to the 3rd row and at least 1 or 2 of them are no longer in carseats, I'll probably switch to an SUV.  For now, I couldn't imagine what a huge PITA it would be to have to crawl over seats to help my kiddos out.  The sliding doors are also heaven sent.  I can't imagine how many door dings my kids would have caused by now...

I love my SUV (tahoe).  I don't have the second LO yet ( I will on Friday).  But I can still fit someone in the backseat and have plenty of trunk space (which is a must b/c we live far from home ans try to go back monthly).  I use to nanny for a lady who had a Yukon XL.  LOved it, she had 3 kids.  It was easy getting in and out.  When I was younger I hated the mini van, the seats were uncomfortable, and I didnt find it spacious.  This was like 15 years ago...so Im sure they have changed.  Good luck picking one out.
  • Just traded in a SUV for a minivan and wish I had done it sooner.
