2nd Trimester

they saw a "flicker of light" in his heart...?

Just got back from the Dr, and my u/s report from Friday said there was a "flicker of light" in the baby's heart. I KNEW something was up bc the tech kept going back at the heart to look at it. My m/w kept saying its probably nothing, but sometimes its a marker for Down's - I never did the NT scan in 1st tri. But, she said almost always its just a deposit of calcium and probably by the time I go in for genetic counseling and get another u/s it'll be gone. Has this happened to anyone else? She kept trying to reassure me more than likely its nothing, and if the tech and dr at the u/s center thought it was something serious they would have called my dr right away.

  • It has happened to me and a few others on the board.  You can read about my experience in my blog (link below).  I was a wreck as well but went and saw the specialist and they said everything looked fine!  Good luck to you and everything will turn out just fine!
  • I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the flicker of light in the heart. I hope everything turns out to be okay. T&Ps
  • It's in my blog under "It's a Boy"
  • That happened to a friend of mine and her baby was born perfectly healthy! GL! You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  • I have no experience with this but watned to say I will keep you in my prayers.
  • They saw this with one of my twins.  They said it was really nothing to worry about. If your baby was going to have down syndrome it would have more than one soft marker and there are "hard makers" like no nasal bone or femur measurements that would be more serious. I am hoping it goes away though because it has me worried as well. My dr. said she has seen this 200 times and they all turned out healthy.
  • I am going through this right now too- but I also have a cyst on the brain so I am being referred to Mayo.  I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!  Good luck!

  • We had the same thing happen at our 19 week u/s.  I did the NT scan around 13 weeks and based on my age there was a 1 in 740 chance of downs, but with the other testing it was 1 in 2400.  The doctor saw no other soft markers and all other measurements look good.  I had another u/s on Saturday due to a fall and it was still there.  But I am scheduled for another u/s on the 24th with my normal doctor, so we will learn more then.
