Article on Behavioral Treatment

I wanted to share this article I read recently.  I have long suspected that Sam might have ADHD (esp. since I was diagnosed as an adult), and I came across this while looking for more information.

The article is geared toward ADHD children, but the principles mentioned would work very well for any child with a little tweaking.

The one idea I particularly love is the tokens.  I like it in that, unlike a sticker chart, you can take tokens away; so it works as both a positive reinforcement tool and a negative consequences tool. I am going to use the tokens for the kids to "buy" TV/Computer/Wii time.

Re: Article on Behavioral Treatment

  • Awesome. Thanks for the article.  We are going through the process of diagnosing Micaela... It's been very frustrating.  I also like the idea of tokens, I think we'll start using that.

  • I saw a SuperNanny episode where they were dealing with an ADHD son that the parents had chosen not to medicate (they said they had tried medication, and didn't see a difference).  SuperNanny was fine with that, but asked them what alternative treatment they were using to help him, and they were dumbfounded.  They said they weren't doing anything different.  I think they thought "it is what it is".

It was very interesting to hear SuperNanny's ideas of what they could do to help him.  She really showed them how they could react to his outbursts to help calm him down instead of exasperate the situation - and also a reward system that interested him.  The parents said they saw remarkable improvement in the son just based on the way they changed their reactions to things and spending some additional time with him (sitting down to help with homework, etc), where otherwise, he would get distracted and unruly.

I think so many people just try to "deal with it" instead of trying to help things along.  These poor children have a disorder - wouldn't you want to help your child if they had diabetes, or some other medical issue?

(Sorry - I posted this before I actually read the article - but it interests me, so I think I'll go back and take a look).

  • Read the article, and liked it a lot - going to save it for future use!  Thanks for sharing!
  • I'm glad you guys liked the article, and hope it's useful!  CareBear01, do you happen to remember which episode of Super Nanny that was?  The family name, perhaps?  I think I'd like to watch it.

Oh, and by the way everyone, don't think for one second that "farticle" in the web address escaped my attention!

It was this one - but not sure if I can find a replay of it -

Here it is on the supernanny website (Park family) - but if you search the episodes for "adhd" several different families pop up - so there are several to choose from to watch relating to the dealing with the disorder.
