Is your name "popular"? Are you still going to use it?

DD #1 has a very unique name (unless you live in Hawaii), it's Leilani.  I wanted something equally unique and beautiful for DD #2.  However, I have fallen in love with Olivia and YES I know its popular..but I still love it...what are your thoughts?  Use?  Not use?  find something else?

I have one of the most popular names for the year I was born.  I was fine with it.

So, I would say, if you love it, use it.  We are using classic names that are somewhat popular.

  • Use it - it's classic - we're still up and down with our names - most likely waiting until he's born to make the final decision! (We're not announcing until the Bris (Jewish chop-chop ceremony) so, it's not a rush to know before-hand)...I LOVE Olivia though!!! Oliver was initially a top choice for me - but, I love the name Olivia more and would rather wait and see if we ever have a girl :)
  • DD's name is very uncommon (not even top 1000) and DS's name was around 350 in 2008, and I'm sure it will move up for 2009. I for sure didn't want anything in the top 20, especially since DD's is so uncommon, but boys names are hard, so I had to settle for 300s Wink

I think if you love it, use it. As long as you're ok with her (possibly) being in a class with other Olivia's.

  • Yes our baby name is popular and yes I am using it. Smile
  • One of our top names is pretty popular. In the end, if we like this more than anything else we come up with between now and June - we'll use it.

Depending on the year you were born, I bet we have the same name Wink

  • I personally wouldn't use it because I have always wanted my children to be one of few with their name.  You just need to decide if you love the name enough to get over her having 3 friends with that name.

    They're both really pretty names.

  • Personally, I won't use anything that is in the top 10 baby names.  My DH likes Olivia but I have vetoed it.

  • Both DD and baby sister's names are on the Top 100 list but I don't consider them popular.  I think it depends on your area as well.  We'll see when they get to Kindergarten!

As a Jessica born in 1986, I think it is survivable. :)

  • We're having an Olivia too..more than likely! We already have an Oliver and want to use the same initials for this one, but cannot find/agree on any girl names besides Olivia. We both love it, I'm just not one to use really common names, buuuuut she'll be one of 10 Olivia's in her class at school! My husband gets to name her since I named Oliver  I just have to okay the name he chooses!

  • Jack. Popular - ish, but still using it.

  • Well as someone who grew up with a girl in her school with the same first and last name, I am all for names that aren't that popular.  However, am definitely struggling with girl names as I like Chloe and Avery and both are somewhat popular now.

If your last name is somewhat unique - my maiden name was very common - then its not as big of an issue.

  • We have a similar situation - our DD has a very unique name, and the name we've fallen in love with for #2 is pretty ordinary. We're still going to use it, because it's got such meaning to us (after a friend who passed away).

  • Our LO's name will be Alexander and thats in the top 10 but I do not know ANYONE with the name. We love it, its the ONLY name DH and I agreed on...so yes we are going to keep it. That being said I think if you love it use it!

  • Our top 2 contenders are Madelyn and Abigail.  I am somewhat old-fashioned in my tastes...  the nursery is shabby chic for example...  so having a somewhat traditional name is definitely a-ok with me. :)

  • You know I remember being one of various girls named Laura/Laurie/Lauren/Lara in school and it didn't really bother me.  We also had tons of Lisas, Michelles, Heathers, and Jennifers, I think a lot of the girls actually enjoyed having the same name, they usually got the best nic names from their peers because of it!  Having said that, we are leaning towards Elizabeth, it has been and appears will always be in the top 20 names.  What can you do?  When I told people on the name board that I was trying to decide between that or Madeliene that I should pick Elizabeth because Madeliene is too popular, well actually Elizabeth is higher on the list!  Some names are just too classic for it to matter, there will always be Elizabeths, Catherines, Olivias, Rebeccas and Julias because they are beautiful, feminine names.

P.S.- I really want Matilda but I just can't get DH on board :)

  • We picked our possible names without even looking at popularity (I did just now to see, and they're only in the top like, 600, so I don't even know if that means they're popular or not). Anyway...even if the names we picked were popular, we'd use them. They're the ones we love and chose, regardless of how many other kids might possibly have them. One thing I do know - growing up, I was the only Amanda at my school. I think in high school I knew like, one other. Now....I work with like, three, and there are at least 5 others in my classes at college. You can't possibly guarantee that your kids name is going to stay "unpopular" or "popular."

  • As a teacher of young children, many names are definitely out for me. Olivia is a gorgeous name and all the Olivias I have taught are cute, popular and can handle pressure. Go for it!

  • Adam. How generic is that? Oh well...DH and I have equally popular names.
  • No, it's not popular, but it's not "unique" either.  Our girl name anyway, we haven't decided for a boy.
  • LaurelBee- I don't know how to reply so it goes in the little box...kinda new at this thing =)

I know I was thinking it was too long!

  • i grew up with a very common name - although i never was made fun of for it - I still made it a point to stay away from common names.
  • Yep, we are using Michael (90% sure it's a boy based on NT).  My dad passed away a few years ago and Michael was his name, so I'm using it in his honor regardless of the fact that it's so popular.  I'm not sure how you check the popularity of names, but I'd be willing to bet Michael is in the top 5.

  • whether a name is popular or not at the time has no effect on whether I will use it or not. If I love it, then I will use it regardless of what anyone else is doing.

  • Olivia is very popular, it's true, but it's classic enough that I don't think it will ever become dated, which is what I personally would avoid.

A name can be popular but still be classic.  My name, Sarah, is probably one of the most popular/common names out there but I still think it's a classic name and I like it, even though there were always at least one or two others in my classes.

LO will be Elizabeth--another popular but classic name IMO--but her nickname, Betsy, is not quite as common.

  • I'll give you my first name since it is extremely rare and I will not be using it.

    Evangelina, also Evangeline

and my sisters name is Leandra

We still don't know what were having but if its a girl we agreed on not using my name or my sisters

  • Yes.

    I don't care.

I prefer classic and Bible names, and they are both en vouge right now.  That's fine.

  • If you love it use it! Who cares about the popularity of it. Our name is popular too but we loved it too much not to use it.

  • Our boy choice is getting more popular by the day but I love it and we are still going to use it. Sawyer Smile
  • my post didn't make it on the first time.

My hubby doesn't want to use my first name or my sisters name if we end up having a girl.

I think Olivia is a very pretty name.

I like my name and my sisters because it is not common.

    Evangelina (also known as Evangelina)

    and Leandra :)

  • Use it if you love it.

There's a difference between trendy and popular. Olivia is popular but classic.

Lucas is pretty common but I dont care because I love it!

  • Ella has become extremely popular, but I'm still using it if the baby is a girl. My sister Ellen died 3 years ago, and I knew immediately that if I had a daughter, I would honor her in that way. I think as long as you love the name, go ahead and use it...

  • I still named my daughter Madison when she was born in 2007. 2008 it was even more popular. I loved that name since I first heard it when I was 12, and it was the only name my H would agree on. My name was in the top 10 when I was born, my mom didn't realize how popular until I went to school. Like pp said if you like the name use it.

  • I hated having a popular name, so I am really trying to stear clear of popular names.
  • I love that name. DD's name is that, just spelled a little differently: Alivia.
