How to tell difference between baby pushing & BH/contractions?

How can you tell a difference between the baby just pushing their butt and body out and jabbing your ribs vs. having BH? Are BH still your whole uterus when you get this far along or is it common to have them just in one area, maybe at the top part of your ute?  Anyway to tell the difference? Thanks!

maybe at the top part of your ute?

Exactly!  This is what I was told.  It felt like my little man was sticking his rump out at me (hard!) at the top.  Turns out it was BH...

  • For me, it's really easy to tell.  With a BH, my whole stomach tightens.  The uterus gets hard at every point, like a rock.  Also, I can feel it tightening, peaking, and releasing.

When the baby pushes, it's just one hard spot - that's not BH.

That's what I thought. Plus, when I have BH, I can't feel the baby moving. It's like my stomach is one big shield, lol.

  • I am in the same boat as you, but you don't sound as worried as I am!  I have no idea what BH contractions and false labor contractions (apparently they are two different things) are supposed to feel like and if I've had any.  Can you go into labor without ever having felt a contraction or do you always have contractions on and off for several days before labor starts?

    AH! Confused

  • For me BH are my entire uterus tightens.

When the baby pushes, its just at one spot, and it sticks out so I can see it. I can't "see" a BH.

This.  I don't feel them across my whole stomach though...it is always lower for me.  I actually wasn't sure they were BH's though until they saw them on my NST.  My BH's usually last about 40 seconds.

  • We started our birthing classes last night. We were told that contrary to popular belief, that whole baby sticking it's butt out/stretching feeling is in fact a BH. The main part of the ctx is across the top of your ute because it's working to push the baby down.

Interesting. My doc told me the exact opposite. I'm going to read up on it.

If thats the case, then I easily often have over 5 BH an hour, which isn't good.

I've heard so many different numbers for that. Last night the instructor said 8, if they're irregular and if they go away when you change positions it's okay.
