1st Trimester

My dog gave me a sharp poke in belly - ok in week 7?

My enthusiastic dog jumped on my lap and I felt a little poke in my abdomen.  I'm sure not serious because the baby is so small at this point.  But is anyone out there dealing with same thing???

Re: My dog gave me a sharp poke in belly - ok in week 7?

  • My dogs will still get up in my lap and sometimes poke my belly. I just move their paws or move them a bit. I've never felt any pain from it and to my understanding it's the very hard, sharp blows to the abdomen you want to watch for.

ETA: like slipping and falling landing on your belly, being hit or kicked, things to that affect. My OB said my pups don't create enough force. I think the tech had my poking my belly harder the other day when I was having my u/s  :) HTH

  • Your uterus is still behind your pelvic bone so it should be okay. And FWIW, while I don't recommend allowing them to do it, your LO is nicely padded in the uterus.

We have two pups of our own and DS is here.

  • Your baby is extremely well protected - you're fine.  I have a 17 month old jabbing and kicking me in the belly all day long:)
  • Having your belly poked can be pretty unnerving (I called my OB a few times just for reassurance during my pregnancy about this), but your LO should be just fine.

Like other posters have said, your LO is very well-protected and you really only need to be concerned if you experience some sort of serious abdominal trauma (such as being hit very hard, car accidents, etc.).

Throughout my pregnancy, I hit my belly several times since I seemed to become less and less coordinated. My little guy turned out just fine!

  • It's fine. :)  When I went in for my 20 week ultrasound, you should've seen how much the ultrasound tech was poking, prodding, shaking my belly to make LO move.. LOL!   And a 20 week baby is a lot bigger.

No worries! LO is in a waterbed. :)

  • I was worried about a similar thing.. in the middle of the night,my dog jumped onto the bed, right onto my belly!! ugh..that was a couple of nights ago and I have been fine(but still a little worried) and now me and my DH are being mean and trying to train the dogs not to go on the bed! Dont want any more incidents!

  • You're fine. The baby is well-protected and floating around in a sac of fluid. Your uterus is also way back in your pelvis this early, so what is being hit at this point are your organs which are being pushed forward. There would have to be a very hard impact to have a negative effect, like falling on your stomach, getting slammed into something, etc. I had a horse whack my tummy with his head around 7 weeks -- he was being playful so there wasn't that much force behind it, but enough for it to be uncomfortable and for me to worry slightly. But it was totally fine.
  • my lil min pin ran and jumped up on the lounge chair then jumped right on top of my belly at full running speed....ouch. she really really likes my belly lately and keeps wanting to sleep on top of it. she never used to do that before.

  • You should be just fine.  I have a chihuahua who crawls all over me, which is fine, but then his 30lb mutt mix brother always wants to join in and steps on me all the time.  I have def. had my fair share of pokes with paws over the past 17 weeks.
