O's preschool teacher said he needs to start going on the potty this week. She asked if we'd start this week as well for support, he goes to school T/Th/F. Of course! So today we've had no success. He's peed his pants 4 times and after has gone and stood next to the potty, but was already done. I've tried in the past to force him there, while he's going but that has really done no good and leads to a full on tantrum. I'm just trying to keep calm and matter of fact about it. I say "oh no, you peed your pants, let's change them. Next time let's go in the potty." He says "ok" every time.
I'm not sure what my next step is....
A. put him in a diaper/pull-up
B. just keep letting him pee himself and changing him
C. let him wet himself and NOT change him
I'm nervous for him at school tomorrow!
Re: Potty Training Help
tyler is 2 1/2 and fully potty trained and this is what worked for us:
i should start by saying we PT once we knew he was ready. we had tried many times before and it didnt work - we needed to wait until he was ready.
on a friday morning, he told me he wanted to go potty and we put him on the toilet. he went and i made a huge deal out of it and then put undies on him. i gave him a jelly bean as a reward and told him i was going to set my phone timer for 15 minutes and then we would go again and if he went he could get another jelly bean.
he loved waiting for the phone alarm to go off and we literally went every 15 minutes that day. i was EXHAUSTED. it really took one full weekend and he was pretty much potty trained. naps and nighttime took another 2 weeks and he eventually just held his bladder.
if he did have an accident i would change his undies immediately and just tell him that it was okay, but to tell me when he needed to go because big boys dont go potty in their undies.
good luck - potty training was tough work! i think the jelly beans in our case helped tremendously
Ugh - I hate potty-training. It sucks. We made several attempts but after 2 days of it 'not working', we gave up and would try again a few days later. That eventually worked. (Probably not the answer you're looking for though).
Here are some of the ideas we tried over the last 6 months:
Ryan's potty loot basket - go pee-pee in the potty and you get to pick a prize (little things like army men, chinese yo-yos, bouncy balls, noise makers etc)
The sticker systerm - once it was filled up, he got to go to the store and pick out a toy (like a lightening mcqueen car or a bubble gun or something else that was less than $4 or so)
Treats (m&ms worked for a while)
Special undies for big boys
I also did a lot of talking about his friends and how they went potty and wore big boy/girl undies.
From your options, I'd set up some sort of reward...and let him know after X number of accidents, we don't get to try anymore. We have to wait until after nap/after lunch/tomorrow/etc. If he likes the reward enough, it might work.
Oh - and make a big deal EVERY SINGLE TIME he tries - even if nothing comes out. "I'm so proud of you...such a big boy. Love you so much --- etcetcetc")
Good luck!
Potty training is so hard and frustrating! If I were you, I'd send him to school in underwear and send along 2-3 changes of clothing (pants + undies) and let them deal with it! Every mom I've talked to (with older kids) says to just skip pull ups altogether, put them in undies, and deal with accidents. I would definitely change him though if he has an accident.
He might surprise you. My son has been wearing undies to school since January and hasn't had a single accident there. He has them at home and when we're out and about, but I guess he's just more conscious about it at school.
