carseats give me a headache

I don't know which route to go.  WE got a stroller, the Joovy Zoom 360, and now need a cars eat.  I don't if I get the carrier kind or the convertible type for infants and toddlers.  I need input.  Is it that big of a pain to take baby out and put in a sling or stroller when going out?  What other reason would one get the carrier type?  I can see having a problem lugging that with a kiddo in it.  I'm only 5'2 and not big at all so I don't know if it's all going to be too heavy for me.  Please help!

Re: carseats give me a headache

  • To me it was worth it to have the infant car seat and then switch to the convertible later, newborns sleep a lot so it was easy to talke them out of the car with out waking her. Also I think infant carseats are a little bit more comfortable for them than convertibles. They have more of an incline, in the convertibles they sit up a bit more. That said, I baby wear a lot and it wasn't too bad to take her in and out of the carseat so that she could be worn.

  • IMO, not having an infant carseat would be a PITA, especially for the first few months (I'm 5'3" and fairly small framed).    Some infant carseats are not as heavy as other (Graco snugride isn't too terribly heavy).   I'd go with a smaller weight one (22lbs) just because by that time, they are pretty heavy to lug around.

Other reason to get a carrier type:   well, I guess it depends on the baby - some babies fit much better in an infant seat than a convertible at first - true for my babies - they tend to run small:)

  • We opted to ditch the travel system after about 5 seconds of looking at them and using my SIL's at the mall with our neice when she was smaller. I hate them b/c they're huge and not that convenient (imo), and we don't have enough room to store one, so we went with an infant carseat and a carrier from target -- mostly b/c i wanted a rear-facing stroller and couldn't find anything other than a travel system.

  • I've heard it's worth it to have the carrier because:

#1 if you go out to eat (or wherever), you can just leave them in the seat and put them on the floor next to you or in one of those restaurant booster seats (flipped upside down they fit a carrier)

#2 if the baby is asleep and you have to take them out of/put them in the car, you don't want to have to wake them up (cranky baby alert!) to move them.

#3 it's easier to "load" the baby into the carrier while you're still in the house and then just snap them into the carseat base than to wrestle them into the carseat once you get to the car.

We're getting the Chicco Cortina travel system (and I was very against travel systems at first because they're so bulky).

  • The carrier is worth it. My DH often took DD out and about, and I just can't see him always wearing a carrier, so it was worth it for that alone.

Plus, there aren't many convertibles that fit infants properly. A lot of seats say that they work for 5lbs+ but that isn't the case. Britax being the perfect example. Britax has some of the highest harness slots on the market, and they just don't fit little babies correctly.

However, the Graco My Ride 65, Sunshine Kids Radian and First Years True Fit all work great.
