Grandma or not?

My mom is an out-of-the box type of person and has no problem with being a grandma for the first time but absolutely does not want to be called grandma (or nanna, etc.) Any suggestions on what to call the grandparents? I don't want my LO calling her by her first name, which is where she is at now........ Tongue Tied

  • my mom wanted to be called Mammy.  :)  Makes me think of gone with the wind, but it works.  hahah.

  • Hmm.  My DS calls both his grandma's Grammy.  And both grandpa's Papa.  He actually made those up on his own, and now its either Grammy B or Grammy S.

My Aunt had her granddaughter call her Oma...I have no idea if that means anything, but it worked for them.

I could go on and on.......

  • My MIL is Nonnie.  She chose Grammie, but my niece decided otherwise.
  • My mom is going to be called 'Gran' which is what her mom was to me.  I like that it's obvious what it means, but that it almost sounds like an actual name.
  • Gammy. LOL! She's 39.

My Aunt is called MiMi. She was 37 when she earned that title. LOL

  • My cousins call their grandma Gigi. I have no idea why, but I think it's cute. The g could be for "grandma".

Or what about grandma in a different language?

    Other Momma.

  • My MIL wasn't hip on the idea of being called grandma...she's single & foxy (total cougar in the best way possible)  so she came up with KK (kay kay) her name is karen.
  • My MIL is GG (as in Grandma G-last name). She chose it. My mother will just be Grandma.

  • My daughter decided what to call my mother - Grammy.
My son calls DH's mother Omi though.

Not that it'll be physically possible but I would have a heart attack if I became a grandmother in my thirties.

No you are totally wrong.  Oma is German for grandmother.

  • My mom is also MiMi to DD. My mom wanted her to come up with her own name for her and that's what she started calling her when she started talking.

  • My mom wants to be Yaya.. its greek for Grandma. She's only 45, total MILF (weird that I say that about my own mother..) so Grandma or Grammy just doesn't fit for her.  I love Yaya, its so fun!

  • My mom has 3 grandsons from my brother. She's also young and wasn't keen on the idea of being called "Grandma." Her name is Jolene- the boys like to call her "Jo-Jo," and she is happy with that. Our LO will probably do the same. DH's mom grew up in Hawaii and would like to be called "Noni" (sp?) pronounced "Non-ee."
  • In my husband's family (and I'm sure other families do this as well), the maternal grandmother is called "Mom-Mom" (as in the mom of the child's mom).  The maternal grandfather is called Pop-Pop.  The grandparents on the father's side are Grand-mom and Grand-pop.

So maybe since you already call her "mom," she wouldn't be too hesitant to accept mom-mom as a title?

    ditto - Oma is German.

My mom was 48 (so not super young, but still younger than she had been expecting) when she became a grandmother and she went with MiMi (and my father is Opa.)

  • Lolo, or something easy for a child to say with maybe the first letter being the same as the actual name.
