Move before or after baby?

We are in a weird predicament right now..our house is on the market and we are looking to move into a bigger place.  I am apprehensive about moving before the baby comes, I think its because I am in severe nesting stage and I kinda just wanna stay put.  We live near the hospital where I will deliver and my doctors, I know our neighbors, I know the neighborhood, its comfortable.  Although right now we wont have a set room for the baby so it would be nice to move and have a place to put all of the furniture and actually start a nursery.  I dont know what to do..Part of me wants to wait for baby to come and deal with moving then- Ill have the whole summer and wont be working so may be less stressful.  The other part of me feels like it may be easier to move and get settled before baby comes even if I am in a new place, new surroundings and uncomfortable situation.  I should also add that I clearly dont like change and to me, having the baby is change enough right now!!  What do you think we should do??  We are starting to get bids on our house and may not have a choice soon...

Re: Move before or after baby?

  • We were debating when to move as well and we ended up moving before baby. I figure its going to be really tough moving with an infant. It stinks to have your stuff in boxes and be in flux. At least if you move before baby you have some time to unpack. Once the baby is here you'll have less time to unpack and make the new house feel like home.

Moving while pregnant worked out well. I had lots of family help and was told to stay put and "direct traffic". Moving day was a breeze! :)

  • DH and I moved both before and after baby.  We moved into one house when I was about 4 or 5 months pregnant.  It was tough.  I was exhausted.  Totally outdid myself because I'm so anal and had to have everything unpacked right away.  But on the other hand it was very nice to just relax the rest of the time and get the nursery all ready and cute and organized.  I think that part of it was great and made things a lot smoother once he arrived.  Then when he was six months old we moved into our new house.  It was easier physically but emotionally it was sad to leave the place we first brought him home to.  We still haven't painted his room or really done anything to it.  Basically I would say there are pros and cons to each situation, but I'd say either do it as soon as possible before baby comes, or several months afterwords, because if you do it at the end of your pregnancy or when LO is a newborn, you are going to be miserable.

  • If you don't want to move I would take the house off the market. Thing is with selling a house, you never know, the house could sell next week or next year. I personally would rather move before the baby comes but that's me.

  • We will be closing on our new house about 2 weeks before my c-section.  I'm kind of freaked out about the whole thing.  I think maybe we made a mistake building a new house right now, but we got such a smokin deal from the builder that we couldn't pass it up.  Guess we'll see how it goes.
  • we are putting our house on the market on wednesday!!!! definatly move before the baby I was debating this to but I think the nesting will help me when I move before the baby!! after the baby comes all I want to do is breast feed change diapers and snuggle with the baby and having enough room and everything set up is important to me I am mentaly preparing my self for the first three months which are suppose to be the hardest you dont want to half to worry about showing your house and making it spotless then....
  • We just moved this weekend and I know how you feel about leaving everything you are comfy with.  I didn't want to give up the nesting feeling but we are planning on moving again in 6-9 months.  The next move is the one that I am dreading, its hard to be super organized with a baby and I know I will not be able to help as much then as I did this weekend.

There are pros and cons to both so good luck!

  • Definitely move BEFORE the baby!  We moved with a 1 year old and it was REALLY tough.  Basically, it's like DH moved us by himself, because I was watching DS the entire time.  It's true that you're probably not at top game while pregnant, but you can do some things (like pack) and move light boxes.  Once you have a child, one of you will be dedicated to that child ALL THE TIME, so it leaves only one person to deal with the move.  We ended up having to hire people to do a lot more than we usually would.  Good luck selling the house.
  • I would move before baby comes. When I had my first child, we closed on our house the day after I had her, needless to say, we were moving the day after I got out of the hospital. I think it would be easier to be all moved in and settled in before the baby arrives.
