I have purchased a few NB size items, but I was wondering if anyone, especially 2nd time Mommy's, have skipped this size when they have a big baby. I am having a boy and we have a feeling he is going to be big
I have no way of knowing if my baby will be big or not. I haven't purchased too many things. Maybe five onesies that were on sale. I got 3 months. I have received some gifts of clothing that were 3 months, 6 months and 9 months. I think I'll wait until after my showers to assess what I might need.
I actually wish I had had more newborn sized things because my son was on the smaller size. 6lb 12 oz. He was 6lb 4oz at his smallest weight. He wore newborn size until he was 8 weeks. I did a lot of laundry in he beginning. But if you know the baby will be big, I imagine you would be fine with 0-3 month stuff.
I will have a few NB but mostly bigger sizes. When DS was born he was 8lbs 5 oz, so pretty decent size, but even the two NB size outfits I brought to the hospital were too big on him. It also depends on the size. Carter's NB size fit pretty well.
I will buy very very few NB sizes. DS was 8.1 so he didn't last too long in them but it was nice to have a few. I'll stock more up on the onsies newborns than outfits.
My first child was a boy. Under the advise of my mother, I did not buy any NB clothes. For most things, going straight to 0-3m would be fine. BUT, you will WANT a NB sized outfit for your "bring home from the hospital" outfit. Imagine all the pictures you will be taking/have taken, you don't want your baby swimming in his clothes for his first photos. But other than this, I didn't have any problems with the larger size. They are only "big" for a few weeks, then they fit just fine. Buying an entire NB set for a couple of weeks of wear just seems unnecessary to me, but thats just my opinion

Second time mom here...Definetly buy NB long sleeve with mitten white onsies. My DS was 7 lbs and he was in onsies for the first 2 weeks. You rarely need to put them in an outfit for a month and are usually swaddled too.
You will also get a lot from your shower so I would hold off on buying anything until after that time.
Thanks so much for the replies ladies! Hearing about these healthy weight babies (6 and 8 pounds) fitting into newborn sizes definitely makes me want to buy more NB sized clothing. My husband and the males in his family have all been around 10 pounds at birth and my Dr. says that with my rapid weight gain, I should expect to have a huge baby, but I am hoping for a healthy 6-8 lbs!
You will need NB no matter how small they look now! My youngest DD was 10lbs. and wore that size for at least 1-2 weeks. Both times I have made the mistake of buying "take home baby outfits" in 3 mos and of course my children swam in them!
DS was smallish 6lb 11oz at birth, and he was even too small for NB size when he was first born. He was in 0-3 until probably 6-8 weeks. I would make sure you have some NB or 0-3 onsies and sleepers at least. Just leave the tags on, if you dont end up needing them you can exchange them.
I didn't but my son was born at 37 weeks at 5lbs 8oz so I ended up getting a few things even preemie stuff...but I'd say get a few 0-3 things they'll grow out of newborn stuff pretty quickly.
My daughter was 11lbs(straight) at birth and even at that size most of the 0-3 clothes were too big for her. She was only in NB sized clothing for about a month, so I was glad we didn't spend too much NB. I've bought a few more newborn pieces for this baby because she's expected to be average sized, hopefully smaller than her sister!
Since you are due in the summer you will probably mostly use just onsies for the first couple months. One PP said to buy the long sleeve with mittens but I do not plan on putting long sleeves on my July baby but will buy the separate mittens to replace those. Plus baby will be swaddled most of the time. You will also probably get TONS of little onsies and outfits at your shower but also when the baby is born.

Babies run big in my family - and my DD was over 8 pounds at 37.5 weeks (I was induced for high blood pressure early). She would've been 9-10 pounds by 40 weeks. I didn't buy many NB clothes as I expected her to be 'bigger' (and carter's newborn size says 5-8 pounds). BUT my DD was in newborn sizes for a full month. I had to go out and buy more NB clothes.
So I'd say you probably will want to have NB and 0-3 clothes.
Here's my DD in a Newborn sleeper at 2 weeks old - I wish I could find the picture of how huge NB clothes looked like when we left the hospital
I would have just a couple newborn and 0-3 month sizes on hand. Especially the 0-3 month. I'm mostly buying 3-6 month and up because I know I'll get a ton of clothes for my shower that are newborn and 0-3month. Even if you have a big baby, you'll want plenty of 0-3 month clothes cause they'll still fit in them...

i'm doing exactly what you are doing. Purchasing a few NB, but mostly 0-3 months!
Daddy was a 10 lb baby so we have a feeling our boy will be big!
I bought a couple of newborn things and a couple of 0-3. I decided not to buy anything else until after my shower. I only want a few newborn things since they grow so fast, so hopefully most people will give me 0-3 and 3-6 at the shower.
DD#1 was 7lbs. 3 oz. and wore preemies for nearly 3 weeks. Thank goodness for my SIL, she had several outfits for me to use during that time. So DD was nearly a month old before she wear newborn. I wouldn't skip newborn completely. The babies usually lose a little of their birth weight before they leave the hospital.
I got a couple NB onesies but that's it. DH and I were both big babies so I'm figuring my guy won't be tiny. If by some chance he is then I can just buy a few more NB items when the time comes. I'd rather do that than have a ton of tiny outfits go to waste.

I did this with DD and only had 2 newborn outfits and NOTHING fit. She was 6lbs and ended up wearing preemie clothing for 4 weeks. Thankfully my MIL bailed us out and bought a bunch of stuff for her the day we took her home from the hospital.
So far I only got one item in newborn sizing. I bought two outfits to have as "take home outfits" and got one in newborn and one in 0-3 months, since there's no way to know which she will fit into. I probably won't get much else in newborn size unless I need to because more times than not I hear they grow out of it quickly or aren't even in it at all. If she's a tiny one, I'll run out and get stuff then (or see what I get for the shower and my 2 friends and sister in law have TONS of stuff for me cause they all have adorable lil girls too I'm very blessed, our baby will be well dressed hehe)

LOL, no. Even "big" NBs need NB for a few weeks. K (who was a week overdue) and was born at 6 pounds 11 oz, was in preemie for 2 weeks, and in NB until she was 2.5 months old. I don't expect Max to be much bigger, maybe 7 pounds.
I want about 10 NB outfits and 2-3 preemie outfits before Max gets here. I'll buy about 2 0-3 outfits to have on hand in case he suddenly outgrows NB overnight (they seem to do it) but it's way more fun to buy stuff along the way. And by "outfit" I mean the little Carter's onesies that look like they have shorts. I don't like a plain old onesies, I think they're kind of ugly. And the poor little guy will probably only be swaddled about 3 times in his life because it will be 110+ by July.
2nd time momma here, too. DS was 7lb14oz at birth, and we were fine with two NB outfits and the rest 0-3MO. DS was born in late October in Michigan-we kept him in onesies and swaddled or in the long-sleeved sleeping gowns most of the time. He was in 0-3MO clothes within a few weeks. You'll start to figure out which brands fit small/big on your own, but here's some help (DS is in 75%height/15%weight): Gerber (sold at Target) were outgrown quickly but fit well on NB (3MO
outgrown at 3MO); Chicco, Old Navy, & Carters gave us lots of life-used up to 2 months before & after size on clothing (3MO outgrown at 4.5-5MO). Someone suggested earlier to buy the long sleeve onesies in NB size with the mittens-get these b/c they keep baby from scratching themselves, but still lightweight.
Re: Is anyone one not buying NB sized clothing and going right to 3 months?
ds didn't fit into 0-3 until he was almost 3 months. so we had new born.
luckily he was born in summer and really just wore lots of onesies

We buy 0-3 months. Though we have also bought clearance items right on up to 12 months.
We DID buy a couple NB outfits though.
