Bassinet or not?

So DH and I are making a list of things we want for the baby. We really would like to have the baby in it's room right away, but we aren't sure how well that will work. Do you ladies plan to keep baby in your room for a while or not? And reasons why it's good or not. If so or not, will you be getting a bassinet?

Re: Bassinet or not?

  • I wasnt planning on getting a bassinet for the babys room but then a friend gave me one so the plan is to keep it in our master bedroom or even in the living room if we need/want. might also be nice to give to grandma if she is going to have the baby a lot because she will in our case- babysitter!!

  • Yes for at least the first couple of weeks. I'm using the bassinet my mom used for me.  Otherwise I'd use a PNP and not buy a bassinet.
  • We're having the baby in our room until we can get a bigger apartment so we won't be getting a bassine but we've registered for a Pack N Play which has a built-in bassinet and portable so it's great for travel-maybe you could could consider that and get dual use of the PNP in your room and for trips?
  • Yes, we plan on doing this - but, we will be getting a PNP and not a bassinet.

  • I initially thought I had to have a bassinet, but after looking around and doing some thinking, I decided it was a waste.  I ended up getting a smaller sized PNP that still had the area on top where they could sleep and using that.  Not only was it bigger than a bassinet (but not huge) but it could be used for travel more easier than a larger PNP.  I felt like it was a better use of $.

I also have a friend who bought a descent priced bassinet, and only was able to use it for about 2 weeks due to the size of her DS and the small size of the bassinet, he didn't fit comfortably in it....she ended up selling it soon after.

  • I plan to have the PnP downstairs for all the daytime napping and for the changing table feature.  Then I'll have another bassinet upstairs in the master bedroom.  I'm hoping not to have him in our bedroom for too long, though, because his room is very close to ours.

Forgot to mention- these were both given to me, so it's not like I'm buying a PnP and a bassinet!

  • I was also planning on just doing a PNP with a built in bassinett but a friend gave us one yesterday, but it's an old fashioned wood one and I still think I'll like the PNP better, but yes we are having the baby in our room for awhile!
  • We had a bassinet for DD and we got a whopping 2 weeks of use out of it. NOT worth it.

If you're getting a portable crib (just get one with the bassinet level in addition to the lower level) I would just use that in your room for the short time it would be handy.

Baby will be in our room for a while.  It is mainly b/c our master is on the first floor and our nursery is on the second.

  • We are getting a family bassinet from DH's parents, but not sure if we will use it or not.  The baby's room is right next door to ours, so it would be easy enough to start her right away in the crib, but I may change my mind when she gets here. If we weren't getting one from his parents, I doubt we would purchase one on our own.
  • We're not doing a bassinet but instead a crib right away. The crib will be in our room for the first several months and then moved back into LO's room. For downstairs we'll use a PNP.
  • We're getting a co-sleeper bassinet and she will be sleeping in our room for a while. LO's room is down the hall, though not very far away. In the beginning when she is waking up every hour or couple hours, I don't see wanting to get out of bed and walk down the hall every time she fusses. With her in the room with us, I can check on her, soothe her, nurse her, change her, etc. without going far. To get LO used to the crib in her room too, we will be doing at least one nap a day in there so hopefully the transition to sleeping in her room will be smooth.

  • DH's boss has loaned us a large bassinet, we plan to have baby in out room for a while as I plan to BF and the APA recommends it to prevent SIDS.

  • With DD we picked a pack n play over a bassinet. I am so glad we did too. We still use the pack n play all the time when visiting family or travel. We would have not gotten as much use out of a bassinet. I also didnt find any of them to be sturdy enough for me. The pack n play has been amazing .

  • We are planning on keeping LO in our room for some time, that way I don't have to roll out of bed every few hours...since I'm exclusively breastfeeding. Here's what we've decided on, to save space, as our room doesn't really permit for a bassinet:

  • Baby will be in our room, since it's the only bedroom currently. We are working on finishing 2 other bedrooms.

We are getting an Arms Reach Co-sleeper from my sister. I think this will be convenient for nursing at night. I won't have to walk to the other end of the barn!

  • We had bought a PNP for DS that had the bassinet piece, but it only went up to 15 lbs, same for a regular bassinet that we borrowed from a friend.  I think DS was in it for a month and a half before he slept in his crib at night.  Its definitely not a nessecity, especially considering how long they actually use it.  If its an issue of space, I would just stick to a PNP that you can use for a long time and also travels well.

  • We have a bassinet that my mom bought when my sister got pregnant and is mine to use.  We have a small (really small) house and I think the bassinet will be perfect to have in our room when we want and in the living room when we want because it is easy to move.  I have looked at pack n plays and have registered for one but I do not think it will fit in our bedroom with space for me to get out of bed and go to the bathroom plus in the living room it would have to be right under the tv or where our coffee table is to fit.  We got it more for travelling and containing once the baby can move than anything else.  Plus on a non-practical note, I think there is something so beautiful about a tiny baby asleep in a bassinet.  It is an important part of the brand new baby stage to me on a very emotional level.
