Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Rear Facing vs. Forward Facing

hey ladies can someone link me the recent articles that proves that Rear Facing is better / safer / etc. than forward facing.

My D(dumb)H has got it in his head to forward face DD at 20lbs rather than letting her say RF as long as possible.  His excuse is his dumb coworker's child is FF and he is younger than DD.

My response was so if your less than brilliant coworker jumped from a bridge you would do it to...I told him if that is the case just wait a week so I can up his life insurance.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Rear Facing vs. Forward Facing

  • Just go to youtube and search "rear facing carseat." It will be one of the first videos to pop up.
  • Loading the player...
  • I turned my son around early because he hated riding in the car rear facing.

I don't think the reasoning behind your husbands thoughts are correct, but for certain reasons I don't think it is the worst thing in the world. They are still in a car seat and protected.

  • Um, yeah, that is a pretty dumb reason.  Good for you for doing the research.  My DH wasn't sold on ERF at first and now he tells all his friends about the benefits.  I have some links and info at the bottom of this post:

  • Thanks I googled and got some good stats.

RF - my DD is 1 years old and not even 20 lbs - she is super short and super small...she was 18lbs at her 1 year check up but she has lost weight since then....also she doesnt have any issues with rear facing...most of the time when she is in her car seat she is sleep.  Yes they are protected forward facing but I rather keep her rear facing as long as possible.

Well, my son hates riding in the car period.  Doesn't mean I'm going to let him sit on my lap.  I give in a lot when it comes to DS, but never when it comes to safety.

Yes, it protects them more than nothing.  But studies have shown that toddlers are up to five times safer riding rear facing than forward facing until they are two.  Five times.

OP, you should show your husband the videos, but also show him that the AAP is not recommending that children be rear facing until at least the age of two.

One way I convinced my husband (I had a very tiny 1 year old, too, still under 24lbs at nearly 20 months) was to highlight the potential of spinal injuries. The spine is really NOT well protected in the event of certain types of car accidents, when the baby is FFing... it took showing him some videos, and having him read a lot, but like the PPer said, now he is telling people why we RF and will continue to do so until he outgrows the limits on his carseat.

    Good luck!

You're very mistaken. Simply being in a carseat is not enough. Rear facing is 500% safer.

OP, there are several youtube videos. Make sure he sees the RF vs FF crash test.

Have you seen on the news that they have those cameras you can put in your teenagers car?  And it turns on when they are participating in risky car behavior?  I think insurance companies offer them.

Yeah, I'm going to totally be one of THOSE moms.  I feel so sorry for DS and any future kids.

I turned my son around also. I had gotten to the point that I was washing my carseat cover about every 3 days.  I dreaded going on the shortest trips because he would cry until he vomited. I felt like I was going to wreck because of the fear and panic of my child heaving and vomiting while strapped in a carseat in a semi recline position.  He's been FF for about a month and hasn't thrown up once.

  • I waited until DD was 18 mos.  She wasn't uncomfortable before then so I saw no reason to turn her around when she was above the minimums at about 14 mos.  I drive over an hour commute each day with DD so when she started getting uncomfortable I felt it was unsafe and distracting for me.  Now that she is forward facing I can more easily hand her another book or snack and she has room to swing her legs.
