We have two ford focuses. They have been great. My fam lives 4.5 hours across the state and we visit often, so gas mileage is important. But it almost means limited packing space. My sis lives here so we are always road tripping together. But our car has always been pretty full so the thought of putting a baby in is a little overwhelming. But I really don't want to take on a car payment. We own both our cars currently and it is so helpful for the budget. DH is adamant about getting an SUV (esp after we tried to pick up our changing table and it didn't fit and we have to go borrow his parents car). I just want to have duplicates of everything at my parent's house so we just need to take baby :-)
So does anyone survive on two sedans?

That is us. I have a Cavalier and DH has an Avalon. His car is bigger than mine, but I carry DS around much more than DH. We've done just fine, but my parents and IL's did exactly as you want...have everything we have so all we had to bring was baby.
Eventually, I would like to get an SUV or minivan, but right now, its not in the budget.
We have one Honda Accord between the two of us. All of our family and friends lives at least 3 hours away and we have 4 dogs. As it is, we cannot fit all 4 dogs and the two of us in the car, so when we go anywhere, we can only stay for a couple of hours becauase we have to rush back home for the dogs.
It's not going to be easy... but we're going to have to make it work. Taking on another car payment with an infant is not something I'd like to worry about if we can help it
Even better, we have survived 3 1/2 years with 2 kids the last 15 months on ONE small car (Hyundai Elantra). Does it sometimes suck to have NO extra room in your car on trips? Absolutely. But money was also a key issue for us and we just didn't want to add on another payment. We have made it work with 2 kids for over a year which was really tough, but we obviously made it work.
Needless to say, though, with #3 on the way, we HAVE to get a bigger car (YEA!!!!) so we will be going minivan shopping in the next couple months.
I think it's just how motivated you are to make it work. My best friend just today, actually, traded in one of their small cars for an SUV because they wanted to be prepared for traveling with their baby (who is about 2 months old) in a couple months and wanted more space. It just depends on how you make it work.
But yes, encouraging the grandparents to have pack n plays or a travel swing at their house is ALWAYS nice
