Cramping & pressure - 18 weeks pregnant

Hi girls - I've been having some slight cramping over the last 4 or 5 days.  Also, if I touch the area where I'm pregnant it hurts slightly - same thing happens if I couch or sneeze.  I'm guessing this could be completely normal, but since I can't call my doctor today I'm asking you girls!  TIA

  • It huuts if you press on your uterus?

  • Sorry, meant to finish! The discomfort while sneezing etc. Is probably round ligament pain, since everything is stretching to accommodate your growing ute. To me, pressure is something different. If you feel pressure in your cervical area I would be a little concerned.

  • I had the round ligament pain when I would sneeze or cough too. Sometimes so bad I wouldn't be able to stand up.   Doctors said it was normal. I do not think cramping is normal, so I would call the doc first thing tomorrow just to be sure.

This past friday I had incredible pain in my abdominal area...it was so bad I couldn't stand or walk for a while. Even worse when I tried to push while urinating... After resting the pain subsided a little...I saw the doctor Friday evening and he told me that probably the baby actually had bruised my bladder from bumping in to it over and over again!

Does your doctor have someone who is always on call? I do not think it is a bad thing to give them a call if you are worried!

  • I bet it's round ligament pain.  I thought I was having a miscarriage when I had it.  It was around the same time 18-20 weeks.  I called my doctor and they didn't even have me come in.  They said if I started bleeding that I should call.  It went away after about 4 days.  It totally sucks.  Call your doctor tomorrow if you're still concerned.

Ditto this.  You should have a doc on call... if you're worried, call.  That's what they're there for.  Are you having any bleeding (even just spotting?)?  Then I'd definitely call.

HTH, and I hope it is just round ligament pain.

  • Sara...It sounds like you arent able to call your MD, but know you can always call the L&D unit, they answer the phones 24/7. At St E we always tell moms to call us for questions anytime.
  • Thanks for the info - I do not have bleeding, just cramping.  I will call my OB first thing in the morning.  I'd rather talk to him than someone I don't know!! It hasn't gotten worse over the last few days, but if it does I'll call someone tonight.
  • You can always try drinking a bunch of water and laying on your left side--Ive had some pretty uncomfortable cramping a few times and thats what my midwives have always said to do--and by drinking a lot of water I mean ALOT and also try and go pee b/c that can help too--if the water and rest dont resolve things they will probably have you come in just to be sure everything is on the up and up

  • Hey sweetie. Sorry you are going through all of this. BUT, I was specifically told to expect the pain when coughing or sneezing and when it happens it's normal and not to freak out. Although I think that is easier said than done. Cramping is also normal. I can't tell you how many of my friends who are even farther along than you or who already have children that said they had cramping throughout their pregnancy right up until the time they delivered. I hope this will give you some reassurance but I know how scary it can be.

  • Does sound like round ligament pain.  It started for me right around 18 wks.  I would get cramps every time I walked from that time through the end of my pregnancy, and then in labor I got contractions every time I moved (which sucked).  I called when it started happening because I was worried too and was given pretty much the same advice you got above, that it was normal as things stretch and drink water and lay on my left side.  Definitely call though if you feel you need to, that's what they're there for!

This is what I was going to say.  Hope you feel better soon.
