Help - Bridesmaid Dress Dilemma

I am in my best friend's wedding in July and we ordered our dresses in December, about 3 weeks before I found out I was expecting.  I explained to the girl who was measuring us that there might be chance that I could be pregnant.  So she recommended I order one size up.

Since I will now be 30 weeks, I highly doubt one size bigger will be enough.  Has anyone been in a similar situation?  I am already fearing what will happen.  I don't want to miss being my best friend's matron of honor.

Re: Help - Bridesmaid Dress Dilemma

  • You need to call the dress shop now and see if you can either change the order or get a different style, unless it's a VERY forgiving dress.

  • Call and see if you can change the order - you're still 5 moths out.  If not you should be able to get a piece of the same fabric and then get a dress maker to work some magic.  Ask for the fabric to be in the same dye lot, if it's at all possible, so it will match perfectly.

I'm in a similar boat but my best friends wedding is 6 days after I'm due - oops.

  • I'm pretty sure you'll need a maternity size, and can't use what you ordered at all.  I'd go back to the store and change the order.  Some stores (David's for sure) let you try stuff on with pillows they have to estimate what size you might be.

  • This happened to my cousins.  One cousin was getting married and her sister got pregnant just after they ordered the dresses, she was probably about 6 months at the time of the wedding.  They ended up having to completely remake the top, the alterations cost more than dress did to begin with.

It would probaby be easier and cheaper if you could see if they have a maternity option in the same color scheme and just get a new dress.

  • I actually called the dress shop the day after I found out, but they said it was too late to change the order.  I've looked for a maternity one in the same style and no luck with that either. Sad  We have an appointment this Saturday to try them on, even though that won't make a difference for alterations right now.
  • I'm in the same situation, I'm just getting a whole new dress.  It's worth the money to me to just be sure I'll be comfortable.  I'll be 26 weeks at the wedding so pretty similar to you.

  • Definitely call the dress store and see what they suggest to do.  Depending on the type of dress they may just have you order a larger size or you might have to find a maternity one.

  • you need to call, like yesterday and get a maternity dress ordered ASAP.
  • In that case you'll probably need to order another one, and depending on the style plan on 3-4 sizes bigger most likely.

  • Get 2 sizes bigger. It can always be made smaller, but if you order too small, youre basically screwed...

I am due ON my sisters wedding day and I am in the wedding...so I feel your confusion...lol

  • I am going to be in a wedding when I am 29 weeks pregnant.  It is for my brother so I wouldn't miss it in the world.  When I ordered my dress I did it bigger however,  my mother (who does many alterations) said that you can always order extra material that can be placed into the dress.  So I would have the store see if they can order you extra fabric since the dress is already ordered.

  • If its not too expensive I would definitely try to find a maternity dress that is similar to your current dress. David's is really good at guestimating what size you will be than (I got married last May and 3 of my girls were pregnany- one had the baby 4 days after our wedding so I am familiar with this !!).

  • One thing you've got going for you is the fact that you're the 'matron of honor' (assuming there's no 'maid of honor'), and sometimes they have a slightly different style or color of dress.  hopefully the bride will be willing to work w/you on this....

i think you should definitely work hard to stay in the wedding!  that's a big deal!  (to me anyway).

  • yeah, i'm kind of surprised that when you told them you may be pregnant, they didn't go for the maternity option right away.  a size or two bigger won't help if you're pretty far along.

i know i will have a slightly different version of the problem:  my best friend is getting married in April of 2011, so I will have had the little one by then, but buying and trying on dresses...well, unless we do it soon, i will be doing a lot on guesswork.  and it will be guesswork anyway, because who knows how much weight i will gain and if i will lose it all in the 5 months after the little one is born.

  • I had the same problem but was able to get a different dress ordered before the order was placed.  They didnt have a maternity style so they ordered me the largest size they could but did warn me that alterations were going to be pricey.

  • A friend of mine has the same problem.  The dress shop would not let her change the order AND the designer will not give her extra fabric.  SO...the dress store here is going to insert a "panel" in the back and make her dress a laceup to account for the extra belly.  She worried about it still, but at least there's a solution and it should end up fine.  GL!!!
