So I posted yesterday night about feeling crappy like I was getting sick. Woke up with full fledged wheezing and some kind of crappy respiratory infection. Went to pulmonoligist first thing, and he decided to admit me to hospital, hopefully for just one day. So here I am!
Now for the meds - I'm on nebulizer stuff for my asthma, and the dr gave me 60 mg of prednisone at the office and said I'd get 60mg tomorrow. Here, the nurse said I was scheduled for 125 mg of solumedrol (prednisone, basically). I figured it was a mistake. Nope! I have NEVER (not even when not pregnant) taken that much at one time, and last time in November I was hospitalized for the flu and pneumonia, and I was only getting 120 a day in three doses of 40 mg. I told the nurse I was just not comfortable with that high of a dosage, especially since no dr has seen me in the hospital yet and the pulmonologist hasn't listened to me since I had the first dose.
The nurse was fine with that, and I feel weird saying no, but I just don't think it's best for me or baby, especially with no dr even listening to my lungs since last dose. Plus, high doses of that stuff have definite side effects that I've experienced.
Re: In the hospital, and I just refused medication :-(
I'm not familiar with those meds, but it sounds like you are. I think if you are uncomfortable it is quite understandable to refuse or ask to be checked out again. Can you talk to your OB or regular doc about what you should get for treatment?
I hope you feel better!!
This!
Good for you! It must have been weird to say no...but if you aren't comfortable with it then you did the right thing. I agree with you that I would be much more comfortable having a Dr. check you out before administering more...and NOT at that high of a dose.
I recently had an acquaintance going through cancer take 3x the normal dose of a drug for over 2 weeks before one of his doctors caught the mistake. The Dr. was so mad - here he was trying to help this guy and someone else was basically killing him with medicine!
Feel better soon!
And don't feel bad at ALL about standing up for yourself in your medical care. It's something everyone should feel comfortable doing.
THIS x 10000!!! Good for you for speaking up and taking control of your situation.
I hope you feel better and can go home soon!
Wow thanks everyone! I figured I'd get more "I wouldn't have done that."
It also helped that the nurse was VERY understanding. She even said, "Don't worry, you're not being difficult, you need to do what's right for you." She said she wasn't familiar with dosages of that (I was admitted into maternity) but if I knew it was a higher dose then I'd ever had it was fine to say no. She also said that although I don't sound healthy (obviously - I'm here) I don't seem to be really horrible either.
So thanks again! I've never said no to a doctor before (especially in the hospital), so it was a new experience for me!
