Baby Names

Please just spell it right...

...for the kid's sake.  I have a new student named Mon? which I, of course, pronounced "mo-NAH"...how it's spelled.  She said "No, it's Monet"  For heaven's sake.  This poor girl.  Her whole life her name will be pronounced wrong b/c her mom didn't know how to spell.

If people knew how to spell names according to english pronounciation, this name wouldn't be an issue.

I am not a fan of unique spellings...BUT if people who come to America don't have to learn English, why should everyone adhere to only English pronounciation (and I'm not talking about just people who are foreign).  Unique spellings = bad, but having to name your child based on english pronounciation = stupid.  This is a free country, right?  That's the point.

A free country means they won't get prison time. Doesn't mean we won't judge them and feel sorry for their kid.

Being a foreign language teacher, I can understand what you're saying regarding foreign names. However, even as a linguist, when I look at names I have to think "OK...if this were Italian, it would be pronounced this way, Spanish, this way, but I know that his parents live down the street and are good ol Americans and it's really just a sign that they can't spell"
