4 vs. 4T....what does your 4 year old DD wear?

I was on here the other day and I think I read a post that the difference between a size 4 in girls and a 4T is that the 4T is cut more generously for a diaper.  Is that the only difference or is there other differences as well?  Is anyone else's 4 year old's wearing stuff from the girl's section rather than the toddler section?

DD is clearly out of 3T clothes.  I always have an issue with pants for her where they fit in length but the waist is too big.  Seeing as it is that she's ready to move up a size, I'm wondering if I should try the 4 in girls and maybe that will help with the waist issues I'm having with pants.  Don't girls clothing often times come in slim sizes?  I'm thinking I'll just take her with me the next time I go shopping and make her actually try clothes on!

It also makes me really sad to think about "crossing the aisle" over to the girls section for her.  I wasn't really prepared to start shopping the girls section for at least another year because I had it in my head that those clothes were really designed to start at 5-6 years.  It makes me realize just how big she's getting. =(

  • She wears both.

    Shirts, she wears a 4.  Bottoms/dresses, a 4T.

I actually got her some size 4 shorts from Target over the weekend.  The Circo brand shorts for toddlers seem to run short in the stride and small in the butt.  The girls' shorts seem like they'd be a better fit.

At this size though, I like shopping in both departments.

  • I've never really taken notice- I just buy size 4 and don't really pay attention to whether or not there's a "T" behind the 4.

That being said, in pants I pretty much exclusively buy ds 4 slims these days. I have no idea if they're 4T slims or just 4 slims.

  • She's a 4T in Gap, at Target I'm buying more in the girls section (XS/4-5). Old Navy - 5T because the girl XS fits her weird. Gymbo 4slim if I can find them.

  • My 4y/o is still in 3t , esp in pants. She has some 4t tops and some size 4 tops for length. I recently found 4 slim jeans w/ an adjustable waist at target and scooped them up. They did look much slimmer than the 4s and the 4t. Here's hopin' the 3 t length just fits but the waist is huge. She has a pair of size 4t skinny jeans from TCP. They were on sale over the holidays, otherwise I've only seen that fit in the girls section. And they were big compared to the pair I bought. Maybe marked wrong? B/c the 4t fit dd aside from the droopy butt, but she has that in most pants. Her Gap leggings are 3t. Dd is 39" and 32lb.
  • I don't think 4T takes a diaper into consideration, that hasn't been my experience at all.  I think the two sizes are very similar, 4 is a little longer from what I've seen.  I'm actually excited to buy those sizes, I feel like 4T and 5T are impossible to find.

  • DD wore both last summer and this winter. I haven't noticed a big difference in size or cut between the two. The styles are slightly different between a 4 and 4T so I just bought whichever I liked better. I got twice the selection. Oh, and I just buy pants or skirts that have an adjustable waist. I have to go in at least 2-3 slots when DD first starts a size and then move out as she grows. Right now her 4/4T pants are back to normal in the waist and just slightly too short in length (ride up about 1/2" when she's sitting).

Everything I bought her for this summer has been a mix of 5 and 5T. Some stores have both. Some don't. If they do, then I just get twice the selection again. :)
