1st Trimester

For those using Midwives...?

DH and I have decided to use a midwife, as long as my first appointment with DR goes well and everything is healthy.

My question is this:  My Drs appointment is March 3, I'll be 9 weeks.  After that appointment I would like to switch to the practice's midwife but I've been told her appointments for new pregnancies is "far away" (they weren't specific).  Will I be able to switch from a Dr to a midwife when I'm more than 20 weeks?  I'm thinking her wait list might be 2-3 months.

I'd like to stay in the practice, they have a beautiful facility and great u/s machines.  There are other midwifes in our smaller community but that's not my preference.  So, any input would be wonderful!  TIA

Re: For those using Midwives...?

  • I had a dr. with my first.  insurance changed.  I was able to have a midwife with my second...who I saw from the very first appt....I didn't have to wait or anything... I saw her at 8 weeks and until I delivered and after.  I LOVED HER.  I switched insurances again - and have to go back to dr.

That's too bad.  Insurance companies suck.  DH and I are SO very excited about using a midwife.

  • I know...I would totally go back to my midwife, she was my ob also....I just loved her.  I liked my doc(s) too...but I just "connected" with my mw!  Good luck to you - I hope you find a mw you like :)

  • At my practice, they rotate everyone amongst the OBs and midwives in case whomever you want isn't available for your delivery. For example, I had the midwife for my first appt and will probably have her for the majority of my appts, but she wants me to meet all of the other OBs as well. She will try to be at my delivery because I want to go natural and expressed to her concern that an OB might push me away from that. She said everyone at the practice would be supportive of going natural, especially if I've done my homework and classes, but she would try to be there for our delivery as I expressed a preference. So yes, I think that if you get further along and make it clear that you are interested in having an appt with the midwife and tell her you would like to have her for your birth, they would probably accommodate that, no matter where you are in your pregnancy.
  • Maybe you have to wait longer for your 1st appointment. My midwife group doesn't want to see you (as long as there are no problems) until 10-12 weeks for your 1st appt. I'd call now and schedule the earliest appointment she has available and just stay with the Dr. until then. I don't see why switching at 20 weeks+ would be an issue unless you meet her and don't like her (in which case you could just go back to the Dr.). I loved the midwives I saw before my LO was born and the one who delivered him. I hope it works out for you!!

This.  My first was wife a midwife at an OB/Midwife hospital-based practice, and I'm excited about seeing her again for this baby.  Once I told them I wanted to be a midwifery patient, I still had to meet all the OBs in case I ended up needing a c-section or something, but I had the majority of my appointments with the midwife and the midwife attended the birth.  I would think you could make the switch whenever you want, unless the practice's midwife tries to keep a smaller caseload so that she can be at all of her patients' deliveries.  One of the things I liked about my midwife is that she was more present during my labor and delivery than it seems like a lot of OBs are, which is more time-consuming, so you may need to "lay claim" to her services earlier on.  I would ask the receptionist when you go to your first OB appointment, and if she can't tell you, then I'd ask the OB directly.  Good luck!
