Thyroid issues - please help

Looking for reassurance but also want realistic responses...

My OB left a message for me earlier today saying my thyroid levels were "off" in my blood work but she didn't specify high or low. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, all afternoon to catch up with her to find out what the implications of this would be. I've tried reaching my nurse/case manager too but no luck. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this and what it could mean for baby and me. Some of the things I've read online and in my books are very disturbing, but nothing I've seen points to statistics. Please help.

Re: Thyroid issues - please help

  • Hey...I have hypothyroidism...When I was first pregnant my levels we off so they upped my meds and everything was fine! Try not to worry too much!!

  • I also have hypothyroidism (high TSH when not medicated).  I'm going in for my first pregnancy thyroid blood work on Friday.  I believe it's fairly common for pregnant women to become hypo since the baby does not produce it's own thyroid hormones in the first trimester.

Hypothyroidism is easily treatable. You'll be given Synthroid (or something similar) and you'll take it every morning before you eat breakfast.  No big deal at all!

I'm not as knowledgeable about hyperthyroidism, but I believe it's more dangerous for the baby than hypo.

If you go in for more blood work, make sure they test your Free T3 and Free T4 as well as TSH.  All those hormones need to be in the correct range.

  • Before my DH and I were trying to conceive, they did a blood test for my thyroid because I was having 50 day cycles.  She said my thyroid levels should be in a specific range if we wanted to try to conceive.  It's just a matter of being on one pill a day to level you out.  My OB said it's better for the baby as well.  She might put you synthroid.
  • I'm hypo, too, and take Synthroid everyday to lower my TSH-- not a big deal at all. I have my thyroid levels checked at all of my ob appointments.
