RP: A running question

I posted this on the health and fit board but I didn't know if you guys had advise or not (and sorry this is bolded I don't know why)

I finally got sick of my things I would do at the gym and decided to tackle the treadmill.  I've never liked running.  But, I hopped on the treadmill and saw few calories being burned by "power walking" so I decided to run.  I made it to a mile (barely lol) and walked.  But I was SO SORE that night!

I decided to try another mile the next day (actually went 1.5)  to stretch out the muscles that I just used however by the 2nd night I could hardly lower myself to sit on the toilet I was so sore.  This morning my legs feel better though than they did yesterday (day 2 but still sore) so I'm wondering if I should run again or give them a break?  Because I'm discovering I kind of like running on the treadmill!  Should I keep using the same muscles like that when they are so sore?  I don't know if that is good or bad.

  • I would probably give myself a day off and then the next time, make sure you stretch before and after and give yourself 5 minutes of warm-up and 5 minutes of cool-down.

And if it still hurts, you might need to consider different shoes.  I couldn't believe the difference new shoes made when I was doing the c25k running.

  • Are you strething?   You really need to get a good stretch, especially if you are just starting a running routine.    If you are that sore, try doing a stretching video today and get back on the treadmill tomorrow.

Most trainers recommend a day on/day off.  Use the days in between to build up strength in your core and upperbody - it will help with the running days.

Good for you on your running.  Have you thought about training for a 5k?

  • good shoes make a huge difference.

I would prob take a day off. Definitely cross-training -- running can be addicting in its way, but if you only run, you are likely to get injured. Have fun -- it took me a year, but now I love running!

  • You should be able to tell if you're sore because you're out of shape and it's workout sore or if you really have hurt yourself.  If you're only workout sore, don't take a break -  keep at it!!
  • I'm only work out sore.  I stretch before and after do 5 min walk then ran the mile and walked the rest of the time.  I have fibromyalgia so that doesn't help.  I just always try to act like I don't have it.  I definitely need new shoes!  I have looked for a few weeks and haven't found ones that I liked.

I have been doing the treadmill and then the cross trainer for 30 min then doing the weights.  Before I started running I would either do bike or cross trainer for 45 then weights.  But I think since the cross trainer and bike are similar movements I wasn't sore from them.
