Baby Showers

Help!!!

Ok so, as it stands right now i have people throwing me three baby showers. This is my first baby and i have a huge family; on top of co workers and friends. My sister in law is throwing one of them and she is doing a "babies first piggy bank" and anyone who wants to add money to it for the baby they can...do we think this is tacky?

Also one of my girlfriends is throwing me a baby shower for my coworkers and university friends; and we are doing a pot luck...what kind of munchies do you think would be best? any suggestions?

Re: Help!!!

  • I think the baby's first piggy bank is borderline...depending on how it's worded.  I think if you suggest people bring their "extra change" to throw in the piggy bank it would be ok.  Some cute poem about digging under their couch cushions or between the seats in the car would be cute.  But just saying they can bring money to put in the piggy bank could be stretching it.

  • Ya its my sister in law who is doing it but i will let her know. I actually really like the idea of a cute poem to go with it. I have never heard of a baby bank before, every baby shower i have been too hasnt had one!

I think I agree.   What about doing it in the form of a 50/50?

  • Well, I think the money dance at weddings are hideous as well, so yes, I think the piggy bank is wrong. Your guests will have already spent what they can on a gift, and then be asked to open their wallets and give more money? Unless you specifically say, no gifts, there will be a piggy bank to fill up at the shower...I say it is wrong, wrong, wrong! Why not charge an admission fee to your shower?

  • I'm not into the piggy bank thing. If it was there at the shower it is cute, but a poem and mention in the invite would make me feel like I was being asked to really fork over cash...

  • I think the only reason she was doing it was because im only 21, but i wasnt too sure about it either. thank you for the advice i will let her know!
  • What does your age have to do with it?  Many women have their first babies before 21 years of age.

I think if she wants to do Baby's First Piggy Bank then any money people bring for it would be their gift...right?  I guess I'm not understanding.  Is it in addition to the gift they bring?  If so...then it is tacky.

As for the comment about the money dance (FYI - in Polish tradition it is called the "bride's dance") they are not the same....unless of course the piggy bank thing is a tradition as well.  In my family the bride's dance is done (we are Polish) and the guests expect it.  Heck...if someone in the family had a wedding reception without it some guest would start one on their own.  lol

  • I think she was doing it instead of bringing a gift? at my cousins we had a money tree set up so if you couldnt find anything you liked or could afford then you just put a gift card or money on this tree that we had set up.

Well, I am an American living in America, and in America a money dance is considered rude.
