Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What does you LO drink if if he does not have cow's milk?

My son has an allergy to dairy so we haven't been giving him cow's milk...and I've continued to breastfeed him.  I work full-time and he won't take my expressed milk any more and won't try any milk substitutes (soy/rice, etc).  Anyone else have this issue?  He is drinking some water or juice but I worry that he needs more while I'm not home...

  • DS drinks water when he isn't drinking cow's milk.  Have you tasted your expressed milk recently?  It may be that you've developed a high lipase issue recently (I've heard it can set in even after a year).  In which case if you boiled your pumped milk, your DS might drink it again.

  • Is lactose intolerance or a milk protein problem?  We do lactaid because DS has a problem with Lactose.

  • My DD also has a milk allergy. We were in your boat for a long time as well. I bf until 19 months and gave her rice milk for awhile b/c I couldn't get her to take soy. fyi, though, that I learned of a British study published last May about high levels of arsenic in rice milk. The equivalent of the FDA in the UK no longer recommends that rice milk be given to children until age 4.5. That scared the crap out of me, so I kept pushing the soy milk (which is more nutritious anyway). I just kept trying different brands and flavors (spending a lot of $$ and dumping a lot of undrank soy milk down the drain in the process). Eventually, I FINALLY found a type of soy milk that she would drink. Believe me, I never thought it would happen, but what a relief when it did! She was probably 17-18 months at the time. I then finally felt like I could wean her. Anyway, now at 22 months old, she LOVES her soy milk and we go through about a gallon and a half a week! Just keep experimenting... you'll get there. :)

Oh and fwiw, the soy milk my DD finally took to was the cold kind, not the kind on the unrefridgerated shelf. It is called Nature's Promise ultra-pasteurized organic soy milk, original flavor. However, I think it's only sold at Giant grocery stores around where I live (PA). I believe Nature's Promise is their own brand.

ETA: Back when we were going through these struggles, I was really worried about her calcium intake. I gave her calcium fortified OJ to try to get some in her, and right before she finally started drinking the soy, I actually bought calcium tablets that I was going to grind up and mix in her food/drink. The pedi okay'ed that. Just some ideas for you.

Also ETA: Our pediatric allergist and pedi both did NOT recommend hemp or almond milk. I asked after reading about them on here, but our DD is not to drink the almond milk b/c it's made from nuts and she is already prone to allergies, and they both said not enough studies have been done on the hemp.

  • I'm still bfing but we're slowly introducing hemp milk to dd.

  • Milk allergy here too. Dr. put us on Toddler Soy formula until further notice. We tried rice milk and she lost too much weight on it.

    Good Luck!

  • He was on Alimentum, but has just recently switched over to goat's milk - we did the transition gradually, to watch for any similar symptoms to his cow's milk allergy, but none have appeared! We use a pasteurized, folate and vitamin D enriched whole fat type.
  • DS loves Silk Vanilla Soy milk.  I know you said he wouldn't take soy, but maybe a different brand?

  • Milk allergy here, too... :( We were given the option of rice milk or soy milk by pediatrician upon discovery of allergy near 12 month visit. We've tried both the refrigerated and unrefrigerated, and DS prefers the refrigerated "Rice Dream" brand.  We do make sure to feed him WELL (whole grains, lots of proteins) b/c ped warned of children losing weight when switching from cow's milk based fluids to non-dairy.  Again, as previous poster stated, we were also warned against almond milk (even though DS tested negative for allergies to this) and hemp milk.  Good luck!  Maybe a lactaction consultant or pediatrician will have some suggestions... :)
