s/o Big Ultrasound

I think this is so strange & wanted to know if anyone else had this same experience...

My BFF's OB doesn't tell you the sex at your "big" (anatomy scan) ultrasound. She wanted to know, so she had to go to one of those 3D places. I was SO surprised and thought it was so weird that they don't tell you. She really loves the practice & her doctor especially, so she just forks over the money to go to the 3D place.

Just wondering...would that be enough to make you choose a different practice?

  • For real? That is insane. I have never heard this! I would probably switch, but that is just me! I was so eager I didn't wait until my 20 week apt and went to get a 3D done at 15 weeks. I was too excited. haha!

  • That is totally weird. I wonder why they won't tell you - that makes no sense! I imagine most people don't know about it until the U/S so it would be late to switch.

  • They must have predicted it wrong frequently in the past, I am going to assume?

SO odd!!!  That's crazy that she had to pay to go elsewhere.

  • That makes me really wonder why the doctor won't let the patient know the gender.  I wonder if they've gotten it wrong several times and decided to just not tell people anymore?  Who knows.....  I'd probably switch only b/c I am not willing to pay extra $$$ for those 3D places when I'm already paying for an ultrasound at the doctor's office.  It's just not worth it to me.

ETA.....I just thought of this....If I really loved the doctor and was totally against switching b/c I loved him/her so much.  Then I'd probably not find out at all.  I've always liked the idea of a surprise but we found out with DD b/c DH wanted to so badly.  But I am so cheap that I'd probably just wait and see b/c my doctor wouldn't tell me.  Lol!

  • That seems really odd to me...i mean i can understand if they maybe predict incorrectly but its not like they sign a piece of paper telling u that its 100% without a doubt that specific sex. I realy wonder what their reasoning behind that is....id def question that and its really the patients personal info that should be shared with them...of course i could see the screen during mine and knew before the tech told me that it was a boy!

  • In Canada, by law, the ultrasound tech/dr. is not allowed to disclose the sex of the baby for legal reasons. There were a lot of foreigners electing to have late term abortions after finding out they are having a girl. It must be a legal thing for that dr. and they chose not to disclose at their practice, I hope that trend doesn't become standard in the US.

*the only reason I know this is I posted something on the Canada board once asking about something when we thought we were going to have to go to Canada and I started reading posts on there.

ETA-No I wouldn't switch if I loved the practice. I paid for a 3D ultrasound at another locations w/#1 and plan to do so w/#2.

  • Yes, I would switch. To me, it is important to find out the gender at the big ultrasound and I would not want to pay to go somewhere else to find out.
  • dealbreaker. yes

  • I wouldn't switch over it but again I know all too well the big u/s isn't to find the out the gender.  It is to make sure the baby is healthy.
