Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What do you feed your 9mo?

We still do baby fruits and veggies with oatmeal and of course the formula bottle.

I've tried puffs (different flavors) - no good

Yogurt melts - meh.

Biter Biscuts - he loves, but he can now bite a hole piece off (he has 4 teeth) so I'd like to stick to mashed small foods so to not risk choking.

What do you give?

  • By 9 months, both of my kids were on 100% table/finger foods.  They basically ate/eat what we did with the exception of egg whites, honey, shellfish and nuts.  Everything else was fair game and i just serve them off my plate.  I cut stuff that is really tough, like meat, into tiny bites, but the smooshier things I let them learn how to take bites.  Like I'll give them chunks of bananas, spears of avocados, etc.  Neither of my kids has ever choked.

  • I just cut up whatever we are eating really small (usually pieces about the size of a pea or slightly smaller). I give DS things like bread, bagels, cheese (his favorite), cereal bars with the fruit in the middle, waffles, pancakes, hard-boiled eggs (some pedis say this is a no-no so check with yours first -- mine said it was fine), yogurt, steamed fruits and veggies, bananas, veggie burgers, chicken, pastina with red sauce or cheese, beans, lentils.

This.  I also give him plain graham crackers and rice cakes to snack on, he can bite pieces off just fine.  It makes dinner time SOOO much easier when I don't have to make us dinner then something different for him.

As far as the choking risk, keep the pieces small and make sure he has swallowed one bite before offering another.  It's not like you are going to be giving him food unsupervised, just keep a close eye on him.

  • We are still on oatmeal and purees.  DD is just not ready to do table food, all babies are different, so don't worry if yours is not.  Her sister was the same, and she is just fine.  We've tried w/her and she isn't ready for texture.
  • L hates purees, he will take some as long as he has some finger foods in his hands. He just broke his first two teeth this week and has been eating table foods for over a month. He does amazingly well with it. I just make sure that the food is soft. He loves toast and bites and chews very well.
