Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO only sleeps 9 hours overnight......

when is their bedtime?  DS, despite sleep training, can only seem to do 9 hours overnight.  On rare occasions 10 hours.  His pedi said this falls under the "normal" range.  Since he goes to bed at about 7:00, this means we are all up for the day at 4 a.m.

We can't seem to keep him up later to adjust his bedtime, since he is so exhausted at that hour.  Although, it would be nice to adjust it so we can get up at a more socially appropriate hour.

Thanks!

  • Yikes. I have no real advice just awe that you can function like this on a regular basis! Maybe he'll start sleeping a little longer as he gets older? Will he "play" in his crib for a while? Sometimes I let DD play in her crib for an extra 30-45 min of sleep on weekends.

  • DD goes to bed usually around 8, but anywhere between 730 and 830 sometimes 9 and on weekdays I have to get her up by 615 (to get ready to leave for work) on weekends she usually wakes up between 7 and 730.

  • She goes to bed between 8:30 and 9:00, and she usually sleeps 9-10 hours.  We slowly pushed it back (15 minutes at a time) from 7:30 because we were dealing with 4:30-5:00am wake ups, too, and it sucked.
  • DS goes to bed around 10 p.m. and gets up around 8. We settled on the later bedtime to avoid very early mornings, since DH works nights and I work days so DH gets up with him in the morning. So if DS got up at 6, we'd be in trouble!
  • After a year of several overnight wakeups, I feel like the 9 hours is a good thing here. They go to bed around 8 and are up around 5. If they sleep straight thru, I'm ok with it. It would be nice if they would take better naps. This has never been a great sleep house.
  • No advice but I am in amazement that you get up that early with your DS and can still function every day!

  • Yikes! DD sleeps 10-11 hours a night, we never successfully did any sleep training either. We put her down around 8:30-9 and she wakes 7:30-8. I know you said you have tried to keep him up but I would try harder! Do his bath at 7, then read some books afterwards. Try not to keep him up too much later or he might get over tierd and be a pain to get back to sleep. You can work up to doing it later and later each night in 15 minute increments.

  • This sounds so counter-intuitive, but maybe try an earlier bedtime.  Lily would never, never STTN when we had her bedtime at 7-7:30.  We moved it to 6:45, and she started sleeping longer stretches.

It used to be she'd sleep from 7:30-6 with a few wake-ups in between.  Now she usually sleeps from 6:45-7:30ish...waking up sometimes to nurse once then right back to sleep.  Don't know if it was the change in time, or if it was her age...but maybe try it and see if it works for you. (though, I shudder to think if you put him down earlier and then he's up earlier, yikes!)

  • 8-9PM and he's up by 5:30-6:30PM.  DS has gotten better with time. He now sleeps until 7AM and if we are lucky 7:30AM.
