Who has seen Food, Inc?

Did you change your eating/buying habits after viewing the movie?  I am intrigued and want to learn more.

  • I saw it. It made me glad I am a vegetarian Stick out tongue. I didn't change anything else though.

  • I am not a veggie-'liker'.  Any tips on learning to change the things I like to eat and incorporate veggies?

  • Actually, the movie didn't necessarily encourage not eating meat...it moreso encouraged eating organic and "farm raised" animals. They showed the conditions most meats come from and it was not pretty. It also went on to say that a lot of what grocery stores make you think is healthy, isn't...and how we think we have so many options at the grocery store, but this isn't really the case.

You can actually "buy" it online through amazon and watch it from your computer. My friend bought it and let me watch it by logging into amazon as her. I don't think it was that expensive.

  • Oh sorry, I just watched it (Netflix), I don't know what to do next.  I want to start buying more organic products and would like to make more meals with veggies but I don't know how to pick them out, let alone cook them.  I usually serve frozen veggies heated up  for the family and DH will eat them, DD1 will not, and DD2 is hit or miss.

  • Lol...oooh. Sorry I totally didn't realize you saw it...haha.

Try making a salad for dinner every night..or most nights...to accompany your main meal. It will incorprate a lot of veggies without having to be creative. Use lettuce like romaine, add spinich, red peppers, cucumbers, tomatos, etc.

I have found the BEST dressing is by Four Seasons. It is the Italian dressing and it is just seasoning that comes in a packet and you mix it up yourself. Try using a light olive oil and a red wine vinegar with it (vinegar is also very healthy). It is sooo yummy. Everyone who has tried it loves it.

  • Thanks!  I will look for that dressing and try it.  Baby steps.... :)

  • It's so easy and healthy to make a salad....it's an easy and good first step ;).

There are a ton of really good vegetarian cookboks out there, too. I don't have any specific to recommend, but there are sooo many good ones to choose from. You can also google "vegetarian recipes" and find some good ones that way.

spaghetti squash is really good..you can serve it like real spaghetti and even add meatballs etc if you want!

  • We roast lots of vegetables. Lightly drizzle some olive oil over fresh asparagus, carrots, green beans, brussle sprouts or your other veggie of choice, give it some salt and pepper, and maybe some whole cloves of garlic. Roast until done.

One of my favorite combos is chunks of butternut squash, carrots, potatoes, red onion, and garlic roasted with fresh rosemary and thyme.

Soups are another good way to incorporate more veggies into your diet.  My kids would never eat cabbage all on it's own, but make a vegetable soup w/carrots, cabbage, potatoes, green beans, corn, peas, celery, etc. and they absolutely cannot get enough of it. We usually do our vegetable soup with just a small amount of beef and some beef stock, but you could also always make a vegetarian soup. We just happen to prefer vegetable beef soup and also sometimes add a bit of barley to it too.
