In April, my son and I will be flying from Kansas to California to visit some family. Sadly, I'll be making this trip by myself since my husband just started his job. I don't need advice for how to deal with my child in an airport, I just want to know how you traveled. Here are some things I'm thinking about:
*What stroller is good for traveling? I plan on finding a nice umbrella type stroller, but I'm not really sure what to get.
*If you've traveled with your child and just yourself, how did you manage the carseat, stroller and your bags?
*Any other tips I may not be thinking about would be great.
I know I have a little over a month to worry about this stuff, but I'm stressing now! ![]()
Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
DS was an infant when we flew, but here's our plan for the summer
*What stroller is good for traveling? I plan on finding a nice umbrella type stroller, but I'm not really sure what to get. We have a cheap $20 umbrella stroller from TRU. Very light, very compact *If you've traveled with your child and just yourself, how did you manage the carseat, stroller and your bags? We have a carseat and stroller bag that we'll be using and taking rolling suitcases. The airports can help you move things if you request it ahead of time.*Any other tips I may not be thinking about would be great.
If you fly with him on your lap, you can not take a carseat and use someone elses once you get there, if that's a possibility for you. Rented ones from car places aren't the most trustworthy.
Use space saver bags if you can. It will help get everything into one bag.
Thanks. We have a cheap umbrella stroller, but I hate it! Mostly because I'm about 5'10" and it seems too short for me. I need a new one anyway, so this will be a good excuse to get one!
I wish I could fly with him on my lap, but it's a 5 hour flight and he will not sit that long on my lap. The carseat will be best for us.

We brought our full size, it was actually easier because I could put an extra bag on the bottom of the stroller and our carry-on

Get one of those luggage carts that cost $1 or tip an airline employee to help you.
Have you seen the thing that turns your carseat into a stroller? I saw a lady at the airport with one and I thought the best idea ever!!! She said that they make them for almost every carseat.
I believe at 2 you can no longer do lap child, so you have to buy them a seat anyways.
We purchased the Cosco Juvenile stroller for the airport. Not an umbrella, but not as big as our Chicco. Folds down quickly with one hand and still has a storage compartment underneath.
We have a mommy hook that I hang the carry on off of.
For car seats, generally when we travel, its to visit family and they have a car seat for us on their end so we don't have to carry one. If you do bring one on, I managed to hook it onto the mommy hook instead of the carry on. Just make sure you take everything off the mommy hook before you take your kiddo out of the stroller.
Our next trip, dd will be 2, so we won't be able to do lap seats any more and I am looking into this...https://www.kidsflysafe.com/ especially since we won't be travelling with car seat.
For entertainment - I love Color wonder markers, a novelty to dd and they don't get everywhere. I also downloaded episodes of Sesame Street, Barney and The Mickey Mouse Club from itunes and then she would watch a few on my laptop. Just make sure to bring head phones.
We are flying for the first time with DS in a month. We aren't bringing a stroller. We don't use one at home anyways...we have a backpack carrier and a mei tai.
We bought DS a ticket, so he can sit in his car seat. I think it would be impossible for him to sit on our laps the entire time. I was going to get one of those things that you can put the car seat on to push it through the airport, but DH said no. He can carry the car seat!!
We are renting a house where we are staying, so we will have a washer and dryer to use. I plan on packing less and doing laundry. It is just the 3 of us going on vacation anyways, so I am not out to impress anyone. I might have the same outfit in all the pics..but oh well!!
