Babies: 9 - 12 Months

It's my way or no way... (baby thinks he is the boss)

Recently my little guy has decided to throw massive temper tantrums. I do not know how to handle this... If he doesn't get his way he literally throws himself on the ground and kicks and screams, or starts hitting and biting. The screaming is the worst. I'm sure one of our neighbors is going to report me to the police. It sounds like I'm torturing him. I am at a complete loss. I've tried a time out spot, but he lasts there a whole two seconds. Any other suggestions? Please help, I'm at my wits end with the little guy.

(Also, I don't give in to his demands.)

  • i dont have any experience with this first hand, but i have read that you are just supposed to ignore it and hopefully they will get the picture that no matter what they do, they still arent going to get to you, so they eventually stop...and good for you for not giving in!!! I hope i can be that way when my time comes!!!

  • Oh man, not looking forward to this stage! Our DS has mini-tantrums now... not full on temper tantrums I don't think. They all stem from tummy time. He rolls onto his tummy on purpose, then if he's at all tired, immediately starts screaming and flailing. He *can* roll back on his own but when he gets like that he doesn't want to or doesn't think of it! I think it's because he wants to crawl so bad.

I let him fuss like that for a couple minutes to see if he'll sort himself out but if it goes on too long I sit him back up or pick him up else he's crying and angry for a good 20 min! (I tried just leaving him there ONCE..big mistake.. he got so upset, took a half hour to calm back down, and I felt terrible!)

  • 11 months old is far too young  to be giving time outs.  He is not intellectually capable of understanding the consequence of his actions.  Right now all you can do is distract and redirect.  Don't forget he is still very young and easily frustrated.  Imagine not being able to communicate, you might lie down and scream too.
