Stroller Question for 2

I have a son who is 3 years old when my little one will be born. I have one stroller and have been debating just getting the snap and go for the car seat. He usually walks most places with me. My husband was thinking that we should get a double stroller that he can ride on if we go somewhere that we are walking a lot. I figured if that were the case we would each push a stroller. I don't forsee myself alone with 2 kids where I would a double stroller.

What are your thoughts or experiences?

Thanks, Karen

Re: Stroller Question for 2

  • Have you thought about a sit-n-stand type double?  I had the Joovy Caboose and was very glad to have it.

  • My kids were only 18 months apart and I only used the double stroller for a very short time. I could have just bought a cheap umbrella stroller to use for the number of times I actually needed it. I would say that if he is already walking with you for most of the places you go just do the two stroller thing and get the snapand go. GL!
  • my dc are 19 m apart and we've used our double a ton... but mainly for walking the dog now. If you don't go on regular long walks and have no need for a jogger, I'd hold out.  I actually carred ds the first 8m while dd rode in the single... or she'd walk and ds would ride in the single (but I could still hipsling dd in the hotsling at that time, she was tiny).

another option... check out craigslist for a used double or a joovy caboose type stroller.  I wouldn't buy new if I weren't planning on using it a ton.  we have a Phil and Ted Sport and it's great for us... but I have a petite 4y/o and I've used the hell out of that stroller.  I don't feel so bad that I haven't used it much this winter. lol.

  • My DD is going to be 4 when #2 comes, but my answer would have been the same when she was 3.

The only time she rides in a stroller is when we walk the dogs (and that's for the benefit of the dogs so they don't have to stop and smell the roses every 10 seconds like Gretchen does).

I'm big into babywearing, so I figure I'll wear the baby during the few times that I need to walk the dogs with both kids.  When the baby is getting too heavy (though I wore Gretchen a lot of the time until she was 3), Gretchen should be of the age to walk a little faster and/or ride her bike alongside.

If someone gave me a sit and stand for free, I'd take it, but I wasn't going to spend anything on it for our limited needs.

  • My son will be a little over 3 when this baby arrives, I got a Baby Trend Sit and Stand. It's nice because it's not as big as a double stroller and DS likes to ride (sitting or standing) on the back, or he can get off on his own and walk with me.

I think it's going to work out great for those times I really need it.

  • Ditto hikerbeth except my kids are only 23 months apart.  We have a double stroller for the sole purpose of walking the dog, and I only paid $50 for it on Craigslist.  I didn't even use it until Ben was like 8 months old and weighed 24 lbs.  Until then, Kate rode in our single, I wore Ben, and I walked the dog. Without the dog, I wouldn't need or use it.

For the mall etc we usually don't bring a stroller at all if both of us are going--DH wrangles Kate and I wear Ben.  If I'm alone, one kid goes in the stroller and if it is Ben then Kate walks and if it's Kate then I wear Ben.

  •  DD#1 & DD#2 are 27 mos apart.  For them, I used a regular double stroller- the Graco DuoGlider.  That was ok.  When baby #4 came along,  DD#2 was 33 mos.  I bought a Sit N Stand LX & sold the DuoGlider on Craig's list.  I would NEVER use a regular double stroller again!! That Sit N Stand is WONDERFUL and we still use it now (DD#2 is 4 & DS#2 is 15mos) when we go to the zoos, because DD#2 still gets tired from time to time, especially when it's hot & we're doing a lot of walking.  I completely recommend the Sit N Stand LX!  It was very much worth the $120 I paid for it! You can snap an infant seat into the front of it with the attachment part that comes with the stroller.
  • Really?  You don't think you might go to the mall or the zoo?  I had an almost 3 year old when DS was born and I could not imagine not having a double.  At the exact point you check out with a large bag, the LO starts screaming, the older one will melt down in a screaming mess, and you will be stuck someplace trying to drag everyone back to the car.

It isn't like you would die without it, but I am a fan of making life fun.

  • My kids are 20 months apart and I love my Joovy Caboose Ultralight. DS is 3 and DD is 21 months and I still use it. Mall, Airport, Farmers Market, Zoo, Aquarium.... sometimes DS rides (sits or stands) in the back and sometimes he walks but he has the option which is nice and I can ask him to sit in there if we need to walk faster than his pace :)
  • My older was 3 when the younger was born and I didn't get a double and it was no problem.  I mostly wore the baby and dd kept using the stroller for longer walks.  About 5 months before dd turned 4 I told her that when she turned 4 she would be too big for the stroller with the plan of having her stop using it when she turned 4.  But as soon as I told her that she was happy to be a "big girl" and stopped using it and didn't really complain.
  • I would get a sit n stand.  I thought I'd wear the baby all the time, but it was too hot when we were outside.  So when walking the dog or going to the park or zoo, I could only wear the baby for half an hour or so.  Then we'd both be hot.  My older child liked to walk but when I needed to get to the car quickly or we walked pretty far, she needed to ride in the stroller.  My life would have been MUCH easier if I had gotten a sit n stand or double stroller.

Depends on your kids, I guess.  My DD has not used a stroller (except for the aforementioned dog-walking) since before she was 3.  We haven't taken a stroller when traveling since she was an infant. . . I hate taking strollers on airplanes.  We always had the Ergo on hand until she was about 3 if she really pooped out.

I have the same and I love it.  We have the ultralight model.
