Convertible Car Seat Q

We registered for First Years True Fit- and it was sitting on my doorstep yesterday!!!  A family member bought it for us.

I'm stumped as to what to do with it in the meantime (prob. have to store it at my parents) - we were planning on using an infant car seat with bases in both of our cars until he outgrows.

Did anyone use a convertible seat from Day 1 in one of your cars?  Does it make it more complicated in terms of dropping baby off at daycare if sleeping?  I am thinking we'd use it in DH car (if we did this from Day 1) and really, Baby will be in my car while I'm on maternity leave and then I will be doing more daycare runs b/c my job is a little more flexible/DH travels for work 25% of time- I will have an infant seat in my car if we set it up this way.

Just thinking it through!!

Re: Convertible Car Seat Q

  • We have a First Years True Fit and really like it. DS hasn't been in it since Day 1 though. He was in an infant seat until he was about 7 months old. I liked the flexibility of the infant seat when he was little. It was just easier to take him in and out of the car in it if he was sleeping. If you're going to be the one driving around w/your DC the most, I'd recommend putting the infant seat in your car. Just my 2 cents!

  • I'd recommend the infant car seat first too. I can't tell you how many naps DD took in her car seat after a car ride! Those would have surely not happened if we had her in a convertible seat.
  • We did a convertible from day 1 and I then I went and got an infant seat. Sure, you don't NEED an infant seat. But it's a heck of a lot more convenient! Think restaurants, grocery shopping, etc. I worked for a juvenile products distributor that hammered in my head that infant seats were bad for babies since their posture in them squishes them, curves their spine, etc. Whatever. She's a nut job. So we just got the Britax. FAIL. It sucked not having the infant seat to just pop out of the car. Use the infant seat all that you can!

  • Definitely the infant seat first.

We just store our Britax in the spare bedroom.

We're switching this weekend due to reflux stuff & I am NOT looking forward to it.

  • I would not recommend going straight to the convertible carseat. I cannot imagine getting by without the infant carrier in those first several months. It was so nice to be able to not disturb her when sleeping, to be able to take her into restaurants, etc. Without it, I'm not sure how we would have handled those situations. Using it with the Snap N Go stroller frame was also awesome. Holly was actually in hers until she was 1 year (in my DH's car--we had a convertible in my car by about 8 months). But we definitely used it to its full potential because we liked it so much! I hated to pack it away, honestly!

Also, we have a True Fit and love it. We also have a Britax Roundabout, and I like the True Fit better.

  • i would def. get a 2nd base for your infant seat to put in Dh's car. its so much more convienent and i cant imagine not having had it. we used it until almost a year and could ahve for longer cuz he didnt outgrow it but at that point we didnt need to get im in and out!

  • Some infant seats don't even need a base so we just had the base in my car for ease but my DH could use the seatbelt to strap in the carseat (Graco safeseat?) on the rare occasion he was in his car...

this.  We just strap it in with the seatbelt onto the carseat (Chicco Keyfit 30) when we need to use Nate's car.
