moms with girls

So the post about ear piercing led slightly to the topic of makeup and clothing. I am just wondering what your feelings are on clothing. I was raised in a pretty strict Christian home where i was taught to respect my body and to always dress the way i wanted to be treated. No, i didnt live under a rock. I didn't live in high waters and turtle-necks. I wore what was trendy. But i did it without looking trashy.

I think it is so easy to say we will raise our girls this way, but look around. The things that girls are doing and wearing and how they are portraing themselves is heart breaking. Its reality. There is a huge difference between wanting to be "trendy & stylish" and being 9,12,16 and feeling like you need to have sex apeal.

Re: moms with girls

  • I totally agree with you. I look at "tweens" today and it make me cringe.

  • I saw miniskirts while shopping in the infants section of Old Navy last week. I thought was going to vomit.

  • I think the more you play up that something is "forbidden" the more interesting it'll be.

I'll probably take the same approach my parents had with me.  My mom always talked to me about respect: respect your body, demand others to respect your body.  I also have a strong group of women around me that showed me how to dress trendy without going outside of my comfort zone or dressing "sexy" in order to fit in.

Hopefully I can show DD that if she wants to dress in the latest styles of clothing like her friends she can do so without having to look like she's much older than she really is.

  • I think how you dress is a reflection of your self esteem. Hopefully, DD will feel confident and happy enough with herself that she won't feel like she has to look trampy for attention.
  • I have two stepdaughters and I am dreading the day they turn 13. Already the older one who is 8 is wanted to wear more "big girl outfits" and it makes me sick, and sad at the same time. I never had any desire to look like trash, I was and still am a jeans a tshirt kind of girl. I try and teach them that the only reason people dress and look like that is because they are boring on the inside, and my girls are NOT boring.

-It backfired once and we were at the mall and a scantly clad girl walks by and the 6 year old looks at me and goes "wow, she must be reeeeeeally boring"

    LOL!
  • Up here, we call the pre-teens, "tweens" and young teens that dress like that "prosti-tots".... I dread the day she turns 10, and wants to dress like a teen.... Tongue Tied

  • I'm horrified! The fashion now is dreadful and can't believe the Moms actually allow their tween daughters to dress that way. I guess it's either allow them or they borrow their GF's clothes once they leave the house?? DH and I were at the movies when I was pregnant and sat next to a group of teen-something yr olds..they were all dressed in barely-nothing-there mini's and mid drifts..hubby just about cried in fear of our DD. I'm somewhat of a tomboy girl (jeans/tshirt girl), but can dress up with the best of them. But, I don't agree with letting your young impressionable daughters to dress in ultra short, ultra low rise anything!! That may be just my opinion..

When I was pregnant, I saw at Nordstroms a booty skirt (with bloomers) that said "Juicy" on the butt..altho, that sounds simply adorable for a baby and it was, but I just couldn't imagine my daughter wearing anything "Juicy" on her butt.
