Brewster

So far what I know is JM has an IEP the other two do not, he receives help with reading and math. Honestly he is doing very well and I was kind of shocked that they were going to suggest to hold him back.

Douglas has been doing very well but does have issues with staying on point and focused on his work. Lately he brings home more of his class work to finish. He does "get" things faster than the other two. But he also is immature.

Kalie is very immature and while she is learning and gets things she is not on par with her peers. When they start working on math for instance it takes her a bit to remember that she knows what she is doing and she has to be reminded but after about five minutes she will remember and do her work by herself. She is more worried about what everyone is wearing than she is what 2+2 is.

I am actually not shocked at them saying the two need to repeat and I have no problem with that if it is what is best for them. I would honestly rather them repeat K and get ahead of the curve, as the school will let them do more advanced work if they can, than move them forward before they are ready and have them struggle more in first and second grades.

On Monday after my meting I may page you to get some more help if you do not mind

  • Oh, I see.  I thought they all 3 had IEP's.  Doesn't Kalie have SI?  I thought I remembered you posting that once.  If she does have some sort of disability, I would push for an IEP over holding her back.  Of course, that is my passion and I have seen so many kids remediated that way.

Ultimately, I know you will do what is best for your kids.  You know them best.  I just like to make sure that parents have all the info that is out there.  As an educator myself, I know that sometimes we start talking fast and assume everyone is on the same page.  A lot of parents I have encountered are afraid to speak up and ask questions about things they may not know. This is my passion.  I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the laws out there! :)

Ok, so if it were me I would push for special ed to be giving KR services.  She obviously has the disability and the academic need.  Of course, that is without me knowing any more info than what is posted here.  If she were my student, that is also what I would advocate for.

  • Thanks for helping. I am so on the fence about this. From what I understand they have a certain standard for determining if a child needs help with math and reading. If they fall under a certain threshold they go in with Ms. Felker, when children reach the threshold they "graduate" so to speak and they will then pull the next child in line that is just barely over the threshold. This is determined based on there CRT testing. JM fell below the threshold while Kalie was barely above it, in fact if one more student graduates she will start going to the class, it is based on a percentage.

They are all receiving speech, and OT at the school Just not all receiving help in academics.

  • We see that a lot.  Diagnostics score higher than daily performance.  Kids takes those more seriously usually.

Because they are receiving OT and Speech at school, they are already in Special Ed and should have an IEP.  Because of their disabilities, I would no doubt at minimum ask that they receive accommodations in their class.  It is not uncommon for kindergarteners to not have academic goals.  In Kinder, it is still so developmental that unless something is stand out way off level, that typically comes later.  It doesn't surprise me that they don't since they are close to level.

It may just mean that she needs frequent feedback from the teacher or preferential  seating by the teacher.  Those minor accommodations can make a world of difference to some kids.
